What are you looking for in an RA?
The Housing & Residence Life Office seeks to hire student staffs who are responsible, organized, dedicated and academically achieving student leaders. The ability to manage your time, work independently and as a team player, follow directions, and put the interests and safety of the residents first, are key factors in being an RA.
What are the time commitments?
The RA position requires a substantial amount of time. An RA may spend an average of 10-20 hours a week working on RA related tasks such as office hours, various meetings, and program preparation.
Can I hold an additional job while being an RA?
Once hired for the RA position, you would be able to submit a job proposal listing your potential job site, responsibilities and time commitment. The Residential Community Coordinator usually approves outside employment up to 10 hours per week, however, if the RA fails to meet their job expectations, the Complex Coordinator may require them to discontinue the outside employment.
Can I play on a sports team while being an RA?
We have had staff members who are able to balance the demands of being on a university athletic team in addition to being an RA. We ask that each person take into account their class schedules, team commitments, etc when considering becoming an RA.
Can I pick my suite mates?
Yes. We would like you to be as comfortable as possible, so if you already know other residents you'd like to live with, write their names on your roommate selection cards and make sure they select you as well. If you do not make any selection, we will place you with residents whose roommate selection cards matches yours as closely as possible.
Can I choose my floor?
The Housing & Residence Life staff chooses where to place each RA based on their personal skills and abilities. While we do take your preferences into account, the decision is based on the needs of the staff team as a whole.
What are the responsibilities of an RA?
The RA is responsible for the floor or area they are assigned to. They will plan social and educational programs for the residents, advise them on academic and personal issues, refer them to campus resources, be a positive role model, hold them accountable for community standards, and help the residents to adjust to life on campus. It is a tremendous growth opportunity and a great way to enhance your leadership skills.
How much does an RA get paid? The remuneration for holding an RA position for the academic year is room and board.
How does being an RA affect my Financial Aid?
Each Applicant will be affected individually. To get the most accurate information contact your
Financial Aid Advisor. For a general idea on how you would be affected

Can I be an RA if I've never lived on campus before?
Each year, we select staff members based on the skills they possess, not where they reside. While we prefer that you have experience living on campus, it is not an essential part of the position. We will train you on everything we need you to know.
How many weekends will I have to work?
RA's choose their duty schedule at the start of each semester. They each choose 3-4 weekends per semester to be on duty. If they have a schedule conflict with the weekends they've chosen, their teammates are more than happy to switch with them for a more suitable time.
Should I go through next year's housing application process if I'm applying to be a Resident Advisor?
Each candidate should plan for Fall housing without considering the Resident Advisor position in their plans. If you would like to live on campus next year, please go through the housing application process. If you would only live on campus if selected as a RA, then you may not wish to go through the returning application process. RA selection will be completed in March, giving candidate's time to plan for Fall housing accordingly.
What should I wear to the individual interviews?
Your interview is an opportunity to show your potential employer who you are as a candidate. Wear something that will allow you to be comfortable, look professional and give you confidence as you demonstrate your skills to the interviewers.
