Dear International Students,
You may have heard about the serious fiscal challenges affecting California. Because of the budget shortfall, there has been a 10% increase in state mandatory fees that will impact the overall fees that you pay as international students. The increase is effective Fall 2008 semester.
I know this is not happy news for you and I understand that this will have a major impact on you as an international student, because you pay non-resident fees just like our U.S. American students who are from outside the State of California. This fee increase will affect all students enrolled in the 23 CSU campuses, not just international students.
The California State University Board of Trustees voted on May 14, 2008 to increase the State University Fee for the 2008-09 academic year by 10 percent. Despite the increase of $276 per year for undergraduate students and $342 for graduate students, the CSU system still has the lowest fees among its comparison institutions across the country. A table of comparison is available at: http://www.calstate.edu/PA/info/fees-comparison-institution.shtml
Even with the fee increase, the State of California is subsidizing the cost of your education as international students. Non-resident fees ($339 per unit) will not increase.
The tables below indicate the new total tuition and basic fees. The amounts below are not reflected in the current issue of the Fall 2008 schedule which was published before the state fee increase which was announced on May 14, 2008.

You will need to carefully plan your budget for the next academic year in order to continue full-time enrollment and have sufficient living expenses. As an F-1 visa student, you may be eligible to apply for off-campus employment authorization based upon severe economic hardship. A state-wide increase in tuition fees may be cited as one of the reasons to justify your need to apply for work authorization. The work permit must be approved by the Department of Homeland Security. If you are eligible and plan to apply for the work permit, please schedule an appointment with an advisor in our office for assistance with the application or to discuss other options that may be available to you.
International students are valued members of the Cal State Fullerton community. We are committed to providing diversity and a global outlook for all students enrolled at our campus.
I wish you much success in your pursuit of your degree program at Cal State Fullerton.
