J-1 exchange students may take advantage of opportunities for internships as part of their academic experience at Cal
State Fullerton (CSUF). In addition, exchange students may engage in a maximum of three (3) months of academic training
employment following their academic year of study at CSUF. The following policies and conditions apply:
Exchange students are permitted to participate in internships only during the second semester of their academic
year at CSUF.
All internships must meet both the academic and J-1 visa requirements for internships and be authorized by the
Center for Internships and Service Learning (CISL) located in LH-209.
In order to participate in an internship, exchange students must receive employment authorization by the Office
of International Education & Exchange (IEE) located in UH-244.
All CSUF internships require enrollment for academic credit. Exchange students must be enrolled as full-time
students. Internship authorized for exchange students must be part-time (20 hours or less per week during the semester).
Students may participate in a maximum of three (3) months of full-time academic training employment following
their academic year exchange. Approval of academic training is granted by IEE and is subject to current requirements and
restrictions of the J Exchange Visitor Program. At present, authorization of academic training requires a job offer and
a written recommendation from the student's academic advisor before employment authorization can be granted. A sample of
the academic advisor's letter may be available from an advisor.
Finding an internship and obtaining work authorization requires advanced planning and effort. Students interested in
pursuing an internship are advised to use the services of the CISL and the IEE Offices at least one or two months before
applying for an internship. Failure to abide by the terms of the exchange agreement, including the requirement for
full-time enrollment, will cancel internship and academic training eligibility.
