S.M.A.R.T. is a comprehensive student support program that includes study groups,  learning assistance and tutoring, workshops, special prep sessions, and more, all designed to help students improve their academic experience and lead to increased success.

What are Study Groups?

Study groups are a small group of students who meet to discuss concepts, confusions, and insights into course material. Each group is unique, contains students with different backgrounds and abilities, and determines its own pace and the material that will be covered. This allows each group to address the needs of the individuals in the group.

Formal - Formal study groups are created for specific classes each semester.

Group of Students They have an assigned tutor who specializes in that subject, and who helps to guide the students through the study group process. These groups meet once a week throughout the semester.


Informal - Informal study groups can be created for any class.

A Students These are established when a group of students get together on their own and decide to meet regularly – they can determine their own meeting schedule (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.). They will have access to an expert study group facilitator who can help them navigate the study group process.



Benefits of a Study Group

Have you ever noticed that when you explain something you've learned in class to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself? This happens because when you explain, or teach, an idea, you need to actively think it through. And by thinking more deeply about what you've learned and then explaining it to someone else, you begin to understand it better. Studying with others in a small group is helpful to everyone because you



Tutoring Assistance

The Irvine Campus Student Affairs office is excited to bring you FREE tutoring opportunities to assist you in your studies. If there is not a tutor available for your course consider registering for a study group.

Online Tutoring
If you would like to submit a paper for your review and receive an online response from a tutor please follow these steps:

1. Email irvinewritingtutor@fullerton.edu
2. Include the name of the class, what are the requirements that your instructor gave you, how did you want the reader to feel about your paper?
3. Copy and paste your essay in the body of the email Note: Please only submit one assignment at a time. Papers take 48hrs to return via email.
