Re: Welcome to 2009 Fall Semester - Our 20th Anniversary!

Welcome back to the campus! I hope that you have had a relaxing and invigorating summer. As we face challenges in the months ahead, I urge you to work together with our outstanding staff to reassure our students and welcome them to CSUF and the Irvine Campus. Our enrollments are incredibly high. You will notice this immediately upon entering your classroom. Due to the uncertain economic times and despite two significant fee increases, our students have enrolled early and paid fees early. They seek your advice and counsel in completing their programs and graduating in a timely fashion. We now have more than 200 CSUF freshmen on campus as well as the five Irvine Valley College classes which are held here. So you will see younger faces than you have encountered here before!

Our library has received new flat panels which give the students more room and a cleaner appearance. Our floors have been freshly cleaned and waxed and the classrooms have been cleaned. We have installed a new Voice over IP Telephone system throughout the campus. This will allow you to use “unified messaging” to receive your voice mail and e-mail in multiple locations. It will also permit us to use a classroom paging system in case of emergency. We will use this during our first evacuation drill this fall. You will receive a personal voice mail box in addition to the telephone number of your office.

We will give you instruction sheets on using the new telephones and will have training sessions as well.

You will also receive a new copy code for use with the copy machines located in the TSU, Library, 1st floor mailroom and 2nd floor faculty row. Because of the strict budget restrictions, your copy quota for the semester will be 3,000 copies. I urge you to create course packets with one of our local vendors listed in the faculty manual or post your handouts on Blackboard to lessen the effect of the quota. Please obtain your key from Arleene and be sure that you have returned all keys from prior semesters to her. Rosters can be printed from your Faculty Center in New Titan Online. Please regularly check your mail box in the 1st floor mail room for announcements and packages.

You will notice fewer student assistants on campus than last year. This is a direct result of our budget cuts. Please be patient when requesting assistance with your technical or classroom needs. We will assist you as quickly as possible. We are attaching the campus furlough schedule so that you will be aware that not only will our campus be closed on specific “furlough Fridays”, but our staff schedules were adjusted to accommodate these furlough weeks.

In addition to this letter, copies of UPS 300.004 (Policy on Course Outlines) as well as Vice President’s memo on Protecting Confidential, Personal and Restricted Information have been placed on our newly designed website in a new tab called Faculty. It also includes the Faculty Information Manual with all the answers to your questions about the Irvine Campus. We have included a link to the Faculty Responsibilities for Student Health and Safety. Please remember that if is there is an emergency, earthquake, etc. you should escort the students to Parking Lot 2 and have the students take all of their personal belongings with them. We encourage you to include a paragraph in your syllabus about Services to Students with Disabilities as well as your policies on attendance. I encourage you to take attendance on a daily basis. This will enable you to determine in an emergency, who is present and who is not. It will also establish attendance for those students who are receiving VA or other financial aid.

Please give your office hours to Marilyn Conklin ASAP. Please also inform Arleene or Marilyn if you must be absent from class for any reason. This will allow us to early alert students by e-mail if possible, or post a sign on your door.

As we host events this year in celebration of our 20th Anniversary, we will invite you to attend and participate. Please check out the new design of our campus website at: http://www.fullerton.edu/irvinecampus/ Raven Mansen is our new web designer and I am sure she will appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

I appreciate your hard work and enthusiasm working with our students to help them achieve their goals. I look forward to working with you this year!
