What is a browser?
An Internet web browser is the software used to view and interact with web pages once connected to an ISP. The two most common web browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. Internet Explorer is preinstalled along with the Windows operating system. Other popular browsers are Firefox and Apple’s Safari web browser. After connecting to the Internet you need to open a web browser in order to view web pages.

What is POP3?
POP3 is another way to check your email instead of going through the web page. POP3 is a standard Email protocol used on the Internet. A protocol is a language that two or more computers use to talk to each other. There are several such as IMAP, TCP/IP, etc. Most email programs such as Eudora, Outlook, and the Netscape Mail Reader (which is built into the Netscape browser) all can use POP3. This will allow your computer at home to communicate with the school’s Email server. That way you can send, receive and reply to emails.

How do I setup POP3?
The setup is different for all email programs and is beyond the scope of this documentation. However, the information you will need to input will be the same for all email programs. You will need to know the name of your incoming POP3 server and outgoing SMTP email server (both will be the same). You will also need to know your username and your password.

For Students your servers are as follows:

• Faculty and Staff, your username is the first part of your email address, the part before the “@” symbol. Your password is your email password.
