Important FAQs about Office 2008

Q: Why don't the Office 2008 icons show up in the dock?
A: The icons for Office 2004 must be removed by the user and manually replaced with the new icons for Office 2008. The remote installer does not have the permissions necessary to alter your personal dock.

Q: Will my email work automatically with the new version of Entourage?
A: The user’s email and settings will be imported upon the first launch of Entourage. Just follow the instructions and everything including any saved email and folders will be transferred.

Q: Why does it take so long to launch Word or Excel?
A: Please be patient while Word or Excel launches for the first time (there are underlying processes that must be done on the first launch only.

Q: Why don't my macros or those sent to me from a PC colleague seem to work?
A: Office 2008 no longer supports Visual Basic. This means, any macros supplied by PC users or Mac users using Office 2004 and earlier, will NO LONGER OPERATE.

Q: Will I be able to open and use files created by Office 2007 for PC?
A: Yes. The native file formats of Office 2008 are: .docx  .xlsx  and .pptx  (same as Microsoft Office 2007 on PC)

Q: Will Office 2008 open and work with all my old office files?
A: As far as we can determine, it will. There may be some REALLY old documents (pre version 5) that may give you trouble and need to be updated. Please call the helpdesk if you experience this.

Q: Can I save files in a format that is compatible with older versions of Office?
A: Yes. You can save documents in many previous formats for maximum compatibility. Also, when you open a document in Office 2008 and save that document, it saves it as the original format rather than automatically updating it to a .docx, etc.

Q: Why do things look different in Office 2008?
A: Microsoft Office 2008 has been completely rewritten and includes many new features. Classes will be available for users to become acquainted with these features (Check below for times and dates).
