Meet the OFYE Staff
Professional Staff and Student Success Fellows
Dr. Minerva Chávez
Hello First-Year Titans! I am happy to welcome you to The Office of First Year Experience family! I am the OFYE director and our program facilitates your successful transition from high school to college.
When I talk about the uniqueness of the opportunities coming to college as an undeclared student, I always recall the following quote from one student in our Fall 2018 UNIV 100 cohort, “There is nothing wrong with being undeclared. It means you are still exploring and you are waiting to make a special decision.” I couldn’t agree more.
Declaring a major requires an understanding of yourself in relation to your strengths and interest. UNIV 100 exists to helps you do just that. You are enrolled in UNIV 100 to discover who you are, to unlock your passions, and to reflect upon the reasons that drive your commitment to obtaining a university education. So, this semester, I encourage you to keep your heart and mind fully engaged and to take moments of peace in order to understand what drives you as you honor that special decision. I am humbled to direct a student-centered program that includes a strong team of Student Success Coaches, Peer Educators, Student Leaders, and Pro Staff who are committed to building your sense of belonging at CSUF and to provide you access and resources during your first semester in your academic journey.
I am also an Associate Professor in the Department of Secondary Education where I teach EDSC 340 Diversity in Secondary Schools. I was raised in South Gate and when I graduated high school, I left the state and traveled cross- country to attend Hampshire College, a small liberal arts college in Amherst, Massachusetts. I taught high school for ten years in Compton and South Central Los Angeles before going to the University of Wisconsin, Madison where I received both my MS and PhD in curriculum and instruction under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Michael W. Apple. My education research centers on autoethnography, critical race theory, educational theory and critical teaching in secondary education. Welcome to the Titan Family!
Silvia Torrez Mendoza
Student Leadership Development Coordinator
Welcome to CSUF and welcome to our program!
My name is Silvia Zamudio and I serve as the Student Leadership Development Coordinator and as an instructor for the Office of First Year Experience. I am responsible for the recruitment, training, and development of the Peer Educator cohort and Student Success Fellow Team within our program. As an instructor, I have the opportunity to meet and work with first-year students enrolled in UNIV 100 and together we learn, connect, and grow.
I am also a double alumnus from CSUF and very familiar with the undergraduate and graduate student experience on our campus. As a Titan, I earned my B.A. in Communication Studies and a M.S. in Higher Education. Currently, I am in my second year of my doctoral program and hope to be finished by 2022. So as you can tell, I love learning. However, my journey through higher education did not always seem that way. I had to learn how to maximize my strengths, rely on my experiences, believe in myself and make connections to achieve my goals. Today, my goal is to support students through their own journey.
So, if you have any questions on student leadership, the CSUF student experience, or need additional support, let me know! I am available via email or if you are in my class via our class portal. Once again, welcome Titans!
Hello First-year Titans and welcome to the OFYE Family!

Since 2014, I have been overseeing the office functions and Student Leaders in OFYE. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need help with campus resources, or anything in general! I hope you enjoy your first-year! It goes by fast!
Student Success Fellow
Hello everyone! I'm Danielle, and I'm currently in the M.S. Counseling program at CSUF.
I'm a lover of music, art, and poetry. I also enjoy reading and learning foreign languages in my spare time. I'm fluent in ASL, and currently learning Spanish. I also love hiking when it's not so hot.
I decided to major in counseling because I believe that humanity can be a force for good if we learn how to heal and strengthen our core selves. I also believe in the importance of building community. SO, I'm really excited to get to know you all and to begin building upon your strengths to make your transition into the university an enjoyable experience.

What up, Peeps! I'm Brandon, and I've been a student of Fullerton since Fall 2001 when my father couldn't find a sitter and took me to one of his math classes. I enrolled at Fullerton in Fall 2014 and graduated in Spring 2018 as a Psychology major. Then, I took a year off to gain some real world experience. Now, I'm back as a student in the Counseling department’s marriage and family therapy (MFT) program.
“Love the ones that you feel deserve it the least because they may need it the most” - Aaron Stark
You may have so many ideas running through your head right now, so if you choose to use only 1 resource at Fullerton, think about utilizing me as much as possible. At the end of the day, my responsibilities lie with you, the student. We can identify and use your strengths to grow in any area: personal, social, or academic. Every day is a new opportunity to become a better version of yourself.
My top strengths are Honesty, Kindness, Humor, Love of Learning, and Fairness. I can't wait to see what all of your top strengths are as we begin meeting one-on-one!
Student Success Fellow
Hi there! I am Isabel and I am happy you are here.
I am a part of the Student Success Fellow (SSF) team in the Office of First Year Experience (OFYE) at CSUF. My goal as an SSF is to connect with you and support you during your transition from high school to college. I will serve as a resource for you for your entire first year and assist with your academic, personal, and professional goals and development. Something important to know about the SSF team is that we utilize a strengths-based approach and strive to focus on your strengths as tools to assist you in your journey.
A little more about myself…I am also a graduate student pursuing my MS in Counseling at CSUF. In 2017, I completed my BA in Psychology at UC Riverside. I have a wide range of interests and experiences. Right now, I am particularly loving all things wellness-related, Disney, nature, and family time.
I look forward to connecting with you this year through our one-on-one meetings, email conversations, workshops, events, and on social media (@csuf_ofye).

I am a CSUF 2021 Grad! I received my B.A. in Mathematics with a concentration in Teaching. This is one of my greatest accomplishments. I am working towards receiving my teaching credential next year. Stop by sometime to talk to me about my love for teaching and mathematics. When I am not a student teaching for my credential program, I am on campus in the OFYE Lava Lounge. I LOVE helping others so I am looking forward to serving the OFYE community. My favorite color is lavender and I have an excessive addiction to coffee.

My name is Nancy Villalvazo and I am currently in my last semester working towards my master's degree in Counseling, with an emphasis in Latinx Mental Health. In 2018, I graduated with a bachelor's degree, majored in Psychology, and minored in Human Services. This is my fourth year working for EOP as a peer mentor, and I love my job.
