CALL

Chair Guerin called the meeting to order at 11:33
a.m.
II.
URGENT
BUSINESS
Senator Bedell thanked
Dean Norman and the persons responsible for the addition of faculty members’
names into SIS+ for summer session. Over 420 summer courses will begin in three
weeks.
Senator Bedell asked
Senator Dabirian to address the concerns of some faculty members about
transporting Blackboard from one server to another. It was suggested by Senator
Hassan that this issue be discussed at a later time. Chair Guerin agreed, but
stated that this item could be moved by any Senator for consideration as a
matter of urgent business. Senator Taylor later moved that the item be taken as
urgent by the body. The body consented. Senator Dabirian explained that there
is never a “good” time to do Blackboard upgrades since the server needs to be
functioning at all times. In order to avoid disruption of instruction, a
“staging server” will be put into place this summer and the classes will be
taught on that server while the current server is upgraded. The upgrade will
take about ten days. Those who will be teaching on the staging server will then
need to export and import their classes onto the upgraded server. Instructions
on how to do so are available for faculty members. The
Senator Burgtorf moved
approval of New Business item 10.3 due to its time sensitivity. The body
consented to taking up this item as urgent. M/S/P [Burgtorf/Bedell] to approve ASD 07-27 Resolution: One-Year Trial to Elect Standing and
General Committee Chairs in the Spring as submitted. (Approved unanimously)
M/S/F [Hassan/Taylor] to
allow 30 minutes on the agenda to address urgent business, announcements, and
chair’s report and delay the scheduling of times certain until 12:00 noon for
the remainder of this academic year. [Motion
failed; 14 yays; 14 nays (with Chair’s vote); 4 abstentions] Chair Guerin noted
that she voted in opposition to this motion in the interest of scheduling times
certain before 12 noon to allow enough time during the remaining Senate
meetings to complete review and revision of UPS 210.000 this semester.
This body (2006-2007
Academic Senate) consented unanimously to using electronic transponders for
voting during the upcoming Academic Senate Electoral Meeting on May 17th.
The 2007-2008 Academic Senators will be asked to vote on using the transponders
before voting begins at that meeting.
Chair Guerin reminded
the body that the All-University Election takes place next week May 7-10, 2007.
Voting ends on May 10th at 4:00 p.m.
