EligibilityEligibility GuidelinesCAPS offers psychological assessment, individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention and psychiatric services to currently enrolled full-time and part-time students at CSUF. The Mandatory Student Health Fee (MSHF) paid by students each semester includes CAPS services. There are no additional fees for services. Extended Education students in Open University are eligible for services if the student has paid the MSHF or bought a Titan Health card for the semester. Students who are not enrolled for summer classes but are enrolled in the upcoming fall semester are eligible for services if the student pays a summer MSHF. In addition, San Jose Library students and students enrolled at other CSU campuses where they have paid their MSHF are eligible for counseling but not for psychiatric consultations. Individuals who are not eligible for services include students who have withdrawn or graduated in addition to Extended Education students in Certificate courses. Session LimitsCAPS uses a brief therapy model for individual and couples counseling, focusing on goals established collaboratively between counselor and client(s). Many students are helped in just a few individual sessions. In fact, on average students are seen at CAPS for four sessions. Ongoing group counseling is also offered and there is no limit on the number of group sessions a student may have. ReferralsFor individuals in need of longer-term therapy, intensive treatment, or assessment by specialists, CAPS staff can offer community referrals or discuss with students how to access referral resources through personal health insurance plans. |
