"Is Group Therapy for Me?"
Fall 2009 Groups & Workshops at CAPS
This is a psycho-educational and support group for men who are questioning their sexual orientation or are in the process of coming-out. This supportive group is for gay/queer/bi-sexual men and those who may be questioning their sexuality. The goal of this group is to provide a safe, supportive atmosphere to learn to accept your evolving self and better your life. Themes may include: how out is out, talking to relatives and friends, identity and labels, relationships, role models, discrimination, internalized homophobia, self- esteem, assertiveness, and taking responsibility for one’s own life. The graduate experience presents a unique set of challenges/stressors to students coupled for many people with less sources of emotional support to deal with them. This group will provide a safe space for graduate students to explore and get support around these common areas including but not limited to academic, future related, interpersonal, family, socio-developmental, and emotional concerns. When we experience grief we can experience a variety of feelings including sadness, anger, anxiety, guilt, and despair. These are all normal parts of grieving and the feelings can ebb and flow over time. Many people find it helpful to talk with others going through the same experience. This co-ed group is designed for students who have lost a close friend or relative and would like a safe place to share your feelings and concerns with others who are grieving. This group is designed for people who want to explore their significant relationships and interpersonal patterns with people. The group will help you to take a look at yourself around relational issues of trust, intimacy, anger, assertiveness, risk-taking, and power dynamics to help you to forge or make more satisfying relationships with people in your life. It is a great group for people who are in significant relationships or wondering what is impeding them from finding that relationship. The group is open to both males and females. Women in romantic relationships often find themselves struggling to balance their personal identities with the needs of their significant other, family, and friends. The Women in Relationships group is a support group designed to foster understanding of what social, political, gender-based, and culture-based challenges women face in their relationships, including fears about being alone, worries about being betrayed, and difficulty maintaining a separate identity within the relationship. This six-session workshop is ideal for students who are tired of feeling like their anxiety is getting in the way of them being the person they want to be. The group will provide a safe place to learn about the nature of anxiety/confidence and learn new skills to work through these issues. The group will also practice these skills and work with each other in strategizing around common social concerns. This purpose of this 6 week group is to build your stress reduction and coping skills while actually practicing some of the skills. The workshop will have two parts. One part will include 45 minutes of learning stress reduction and stress management techniques that aid in student success in all facets of life. The second part will include 45 minutes of running/walking in which members will share and discuss with each other areas in their life that are causing them stress. In order to participate in this workshop, students should be able to either jog or walk consistently for 45 minutes. International students only! The group is designed to provide a safe place where international students can talk about their stress and daily struggles of living far away from home. This group will help international students develop healthy coping strategies for acculturative stresses (e.g., homesickness, anxiety, language difficulty, depression, bi-cultural identity, discrimination, etc.). The purpose of this 5 week workshop series is to help couples learn the following: how to get on a shared vision in the relationship, what you want, need, and can’t stand in a romantic relationship, what you deserve from your romantic partner, what research says are the keys to a successful relationship, how to communicate better with your romantic partner and fight fairly, and when to make up and when to break up!
