Training Program

CAPS offers extensive practicum training for qualified graduate students in the CSUF Departments of Counseling and Psychology, as well as doctoral students in psychology from local universities. MFT Interns from CSUF programs may also be considered. CAPS also offers a paid 12-month post-doctoral position for persons who have completed a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in counseling or clinical psychology. Since CAPS provides services to all registered students at CSUF, we are able to provide trainees with a wide variety of professional experiences within the clinical and educational services of the center.

Overview

The CAPS training program emphasizes training experiences and development of competence in providing brief, time-limited individual therapy, crisis intervention, working with a diverse and multicultural population, and working with developmental issues that are common to undergraduate and graduate students. Trainees at CAPS gain experience working with a wide range of psychological disorders and are exposed to a variety of therapeutic modalities and styles. Our trainees can expect to have a variety of professional opportunities including providing clinical services, receiving individual and group supervision, participating in training seminars, providing outreach services, attending clinical assessment team meetings, and participating in center-based projects. Trainees are also offered the opportunity to gain experience in group therapy. Through these experiences, our trainees are exposed to a variety of professional issues in psychology and engage in an ongoing process of professional and ethical development.

All professionals-in-training are required to attend a multi-day orientation during the week before fall semester classes begin. Orientation consists of:

  • Review of CAPS procedures
  • Supervisor introduction and assignment
  • Schedule set-up and office assignment
  • Discussion of clinical issues

All professionals-in-training will have some core meetings, training and group supervision that they are expected to attend weekly:

  • Training Seminar (1 hour)
  • Case Assignment Team (1 hour)
  • Group Supervision (1 hour)
  • Individual Supervision (a minimum of 1 hour)
