College of Health and Human Development

School of Nursing (Naming Opportunity) – $3,000,000
Time Frame: 2006-2008

Responding to the county and state’s severe nursing shortage has been a high priority for the College and for CSUF This priority will establish an endowment for a School of Nursing at Cal State Fullerton. , The current ‘multi-program’ structure of the Department of Nursing is too large and cumbersome to be managed effectively by a single department chair.  At most large universities in the CSU and throughout the country, nursing programs are housed within a School of Nursing and are managed by a School of Nursing Director.

New Health Science/School of Nursing Building – $2,000,000
(10% of building cost of $20,000,000) over 2 years

A new Health Science/School of Nursing Building is being considered for the CSUF Master Plan to address educational and workforce needs in our community but private funds must be raised before the project can be approved for state funding, per Chancellor’s Office requirements.  The goal is to build a new 40,000 sq ft building between the Education and Humanities buildings.  The building would house degree programs in Nursing, Social work, Health Science, and Public Health. To meet College and University goals of addressing educational and workforce needs in our community, new and/or expanded programs are being planned in Nursing, Social Work, Health Science, and Public Health.  Considering the current shortage of office and lab space on campus, all new program additions require that provisions are made for additional space.  The urgent need for additional space on campus and the need for more nurses and social workers, in particular, suggests that this project should be a campus priority.

Registered Nursing (RN) Pre-licensure Program –
$300,000 one-time/$250,000 annual

Additional ‘one-time’ and ‘on-going’ funding is needed for the newly developed Entry Level RN to Master of Science in Nursing (EL-MSN), which provides the coursework and clinical experiences needed for licensure as a registered nurse (RN) and also awards a Master of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN).

Some state and private funding already has been received to support the planning phase additional one-time funding of approximately $300,000 is needed for an accompanying ‘simulation lab.  On-going supplemental funding will be needed to bridge the gap between the state funding formulas and actual program costs.

Chronic Pain Management Center – $250,000

Funds are sought to support a Chronic Pain Management Center to be housed in the KHS building complex. The Center will provide a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management research, services for campus and community clients, and internship opportunities for students. Start-up funds will provide faculty assigned time for program development and grant writing, biofeedback equipment, materials and supplies, printing costs for brochures, student assistants, and a computer system and printer.  It will be modeled after the Center for Successful Aging which has been in operation and self-sufficient for more than 10 years. Ongoing support for the Center will come from fees for service, student internships, and external grants.

$30,000 annual

Provides funding for three two-year student scholarships for a new biotechnology masters degree program to support the growing needs of the biotechnology and biomedical industries.  Students graduating from the program will increase CSUF presence in the biotechnology/biomedical industry, serving as a well-educated work force for the continued regional growth of the field.  The program is a multi-campus collaboration sponsored by CSUPERB and is scheduled to be implemented in academic year 07/08

Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary: Amphitheater – $60,000

The Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS), operated by NSM, provides important opportunities for student field experiences in biology and geology.  TWS also serves as a highly visible showcase for the College, its faculty and students in the Southern California region. TWS is increasing its role as a primary destination for elementary, junior high school, and high school science education field trips.  The Amphitheater in the center of the sanctuary is, or rather was, a focal point for visitors, and is in desperate need of a complete reconstruction.

Library

Library Materials Endowment – 5 at $100,000

Interest from such endowments would be expended on books, journals, electronic resources, and audio-visual materials that support the curricular and research needs of the University.  Fund use could be specified as long as such fit with the collection development policies/procedures of the Library.  Appropriate recognition would be placed in or otherwise associated with items purchased using endowment interest. Inflation continues to erode purchasing power for library instructional and research materials.  Endowments generating between $3-5,000/year would help address this situation.

Atrium and First Floor Renovation/Learning Commons – $1,250,000
