Family's Pledge Boosts Guardian Scholars
Allen Boerner and his wife, Susan, are involved in several different charitable endeavors. But one of their favorites is Cal State Fullerton's Guardian Scholars. They have given to the program for years and recently made a five-year pledge to the Scholars.
"Every dollar goes to the students," Allen Boerner says. "I can see, feel and touch people we are helping. The gifts make their lives easier as they make their way through school."
Since its inception in 1998, the Guardian Scholars program has offered more than just scholarships to its recipients. It acknowledges the accomplishments of students who have left the foster care system, were wards of the court or come from similar backgrounds. Lacking even basic resources during the transition to adulthood, they are willing but not yet able to help themselves fully, often struggling without families and the financial, emotional and psychological safety nets that their classmates rely on.
"I love it," Boerner says of his involvement with the Scholars now. "This is one of the best thins that could happen to foster kids. I'm honored and happy to be part of the program."
