English Placement Test (EPT) General Information
hr

All new undergraduate students entering the California State University are required to take the English Placement Test (EPT) except those who qualify for an exemption. If you are not exempt, you must take the EPT and provide scores to the university prior to beginning your first semester of enrollment. Failure to take the EPT prior to registering for your first semester will result in your not being allowed to enroll at the CSU.

The EPT is designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of entering undergraduate students so that they can be placed in appropriate courses. Those undergraduates who do not demonstrate college-level skills will be directed to courses or programs designed to help them attain these skills.

The English Placement Test requires approximately 2-1/2 hours to administer and contains the following three sections:

Essay 45 minutes on an assigned topic
Reading Skills 30 minutes to answer 45 multiple-choice questions
Composing Skills 30 minutes to answer 45 multiple-choice questions

The EPT is given in conjunction with the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM). Students may take the test at the most convenient CSU campus. Go to the CSU EPT/ELM Information Bulletin for a complete list of EPT test dates and registration procedures on all the CSU campuses.

Please note that online registration for the EPT has changed and is now available at www.ets.org/csu.

EPT Test Scores
hr

Please note: Beginning in 2012, students who score below 138 on the EPT will be required to participate in Early Start. Visit www.csusuccess.org for more information about the Early Start program. For those students planning on attending Cal State, Fullerton, additional information about Early Start can be found at http://www.fullerton.edu/admissions/ProspectiveStudent/earlystart.asp.

Because the EPT is a placement test, "cut scores" determine what courses students must attend. The cut score for the EPT is 147 on a scale that goes from a lowest possible score of 120 to a highest possible score of 180.

If your EPT score is 147 or above, you are ready for college-level English.

If you score 146-142 on the EPT, you are recommended to take English 100/100W during the summer term and earn a passing grade of "C" or better in order to meet GE English level requirements. If you earn a "C-" or lower in English 100/100W or do not take English 100/100W, you must enroll in English 99 during the fall semester. A "CR" must be earned in English 99 within the first two semesters.

If you score 141 and below on the EPT, you are recommended to take English 100/100W during the summer term and earn a passing grade of C or better in order to meet the GE English level requirements. If you earn a "C-" or lower in English 100/100W or do not take English 100/100W, you are required to take English 99 during the fall semester. A "CR" must be earned in English 99 within the first two semesters. One ILE appointment is required if you have fewer than 60 units. Contact the CSUF Intensive Learning Experience (ILE) program in University Hall-room 234, or telephone (657) 278-7236.
