Even if you are prepared for a test, it is normal and actually helpful to feel a small amount of anxiety in anticipation of that test. However, if you are fully prepared and experience unmanaged and immobilizing anxiety before and during a test, you may need some assistance in learning to manage test anxiety. If your concentration and recall becomes blurred during a test, your ability to succeed becomes jeopardized.

Test Anxiety Tips

  • Avoid waiting until the last minute to prepare for your exam.
  • Plan ahead how much time you will need to prepare for the exam and study in smaller incremental time slots.
  • Get plenty of rest and sleep the night before the exam.
  • Eat a nutritious meal before the exam.
  • Practice relaxation and deep breathing the night before and immediately before the exam.
  • If you come to a question you don't know, don't worry about it, move on and come back to it.
  • Self-talk and messages you give to yourself are extremely powerful. Make sure you are giving yourself positive messages such as, "I am relaxed," "I am prepared," and "I will do the best that I can do."
