Peer Mentor Program
Peer Mentors support first-year students in their social, personal and academic transition to CSUF. Peer Mentors serve in a section of University Studies 100 where they act as a resource, support system and role model to new students. Being a Peer Mentor provides an opportunity for upper-class students to learn about first-year transition; develop communication, facilitation, leadership and other skills; and contribute to the University. The First Year Experience Peer Mentor Programs is certified by the International Mentor Training Program of the College Reading and Learning Association.
The goal of the Peer Mentor Program is to provide mentors with the knowledge and skills to foster academic success, encourage campus involvement and promote community engagement for first-year students. The Peer Mentors are supervised and supported by the professional staff members of First Year Experience as well as by the faculty and student services professional that they are teamed with. Peer Mentors help First Year Experience achieve their goals by participating in the University Studies 100 class section they are assigned to and playing an active role in class discussions, collaborating with First-Year Success Team members, and meeting with individual students to serve as a role model and mentor.
Mission: First Year Experience Peer Mentors are upper-division students who join a First-Year Success Team along with a faculty member and student services professional to support first-year students in a section of University Studies 100: Foundations for College Success, Lifelong Learning and Self-Development Course, which also satisfied General Education (GE) Area E:Life-Long Learning and Self-Development. The Peer Mentor plays an active role in class activities and meets with individual students to serve as a resource and role model.

3-unit elective credit towards graduation for University Studies 397: The Peer Mentor Experience course
- Free printing in the First Year Experience Lava Lounge for academic work
- Collaborate on a University Studies 100 team with a faculty and student services professional
- Ability to make a positive impact on first-year students as they transition to college
- Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
- Junior or senior class standing, qualified sophomores will be considered
- Familiarity and sensitivity to first-year students’ transitional issues
- Knowledge of campus resources
- Desire for student involvement and leadership experience
- Demonstrated commitment to Cal State Fullerton
- First Year Experience alumni are highly encourage to apply
Roles and Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in all of your assigned University Studies 100 section meetings
- Meet regularly (weekly if possible) with your FYST members (faculty and student services professional)
- Meet in one-on-one contact meetings with each student in your assigned University Studies 100 class
- Serve as a role model and reliable resource to 20-25 first-year students in a section of University Studies 100 by introducing them to on-campus programs, services and activities and assisting them to become connected to the campus
- Provide assistance, support and encouragement to First Year Experience students
- Participate in First Year Experience events (e.g. Convocation, FSA events, Common Core Reading, End of the Year Celebration, etc.)
- Work cooperatively with other Peer Mentors and the First Year Experience staff
- Serve as a liaison between the First Year Experience Office and students in your University Studies 100 course
