Spring 2010 All-University Elections

Administration

Willie Hagan

Willie HaganThose who know me know that I’m a firm believer in the concept of shared governance; and for that to work, administrators, faculty, staff and students must meet regularly and engage in discussion on important university issues.  The Academic Senate is one of the key forums where these discussions take place.  I have a reputation for consensus building and working collaboratively to solve complex and often difficult university issues.  I have worked at Cal State Fullerton for 14 years, first as the Vice President for Administration and later as the Vice President of Administration and Finance.  During that time I think I have proven my dedication to Cal State Fullerton and my willingness to take on tasks that help move the university forward.  My service to the campus and the Senate has been recognized by my election to the Senate Executive Committee.  An honor of which I’m extremely proud.

Arts

Ken Walicki

Business and Economics

Robert Mead

Robert MeadAs a member of the CSUF community for over ten years, first as a full-time lecturer and now as a tenured faculty member, I have always held a strong interest in ensuring student learning and faculty development.  As an Academic Senator, I have worked hard to foster an environment that supports both goals.  Obviously, in California’s current fiscal situation, we face extraordinary pressures from increasing student demand for educational access and a worsening squeeze on support for faculty and students. Confronting this situation and maintaining academic quality presents continuing serious challenges to our campus community.  I have the experience and perspective to effectively represent the MCBE faculty in these difficult times. I ask for your support in the upcoming election and would be most privileged to serve you again.  Thank you.

Communications

Jon Bruschke
Jon BruschkeThe best role of an Academic Senator, in my view, is to bring the point of view of their constituency on the campus issues that arise.  Each role on the campus brings its unique ideas about the issues, and often there are perspectives that appear from one vantage point that are not immediately evident from another.  The Lottery funds in the wake of the audit report are one example.  The Academic Senate functions best when all points of view are debated in the open as we work toward shared goals.  As a debate coach who has watched too many public discussions stray from their central focus, I hope that I bring some skills that help the Senate keep its eye on the most important points of the most important issues.  I ask for your vote to continue making these contributions.

Education

Nick Henning

Nick HenningThis is a critical time for our university, and for public education in general, to organize ourselves and demand our fair share on behalf of our students.  The Academic Senate plays a key role in this advocacy through the joint creation of a unified faculty voice.   Before becoming a professor, I served as a high school teacher, an athletic coach, a social services administrator, and a park-based daycare and afterschool program coordinator in both Los Angeles and Minneapolis. Through these experiences, I gained an extensive understanding of what it means to work for young people within the more underfunded sectors of our society.  In addition, I learned what it takes to advocate for more resources to be invested in these sectors, and for those resources to then be used wisely.  I promise to bring the commitment, the critical eye, and the dedication necessary to fulfill my duties as your representative.

Kristin Stang

Kristin StangColleagues, I hope that you will support my candidacy for a College of Education seat on the Academic Senate.  I previously served as an at-large senator from 2006-2009, and chose not to run for re-election in 2009 because of a fall sabbatical. It would be an honor to be a member of the Academic Senate again, this time representing the College of Education. Faculty governance is important, and the role of senator is one I take seriously. My commitment to you, if elected, is that I will be present, be an active participant in senate proceedings, and represent the needs of the College of Education, my colleagues, and our students. I thank you in advance for your participation in the election and would appreciate your vote.

Woo Jung

Woo JungMy name is Woo Jung. I’m currently an associate professor of the Special Education Department. I’ve been here since August 2006 and was a faculty member at the Bluffton University in Ohio for six years before I came to the CSUF. The reason I apply for the senate position is that I truly believe that, by becoming involved with this position, I can better serve the university community. I incorporate the new ideas I have learned into teaching, research and service. It will also be imperative for me to be involved in the ongoing educational dialogue with the diverse groups and faculty in different fields, as a means to advance and improve the missions of our university. I obviously enjoy being part of a campus community, thus I have appreciated the opportunity to work with the university community people, and to learn from how others view differences and similarities. I plan to become active in serving our university.

Health and Human Development

Stephan Walk

Stephan WalkJoining the faculty at Cal State Fullerton in 1994, I have served in a number leadership roles, including chairing the University Curriculum Committee from 2001-2002, the Athletics Advisory Council from 2002-2006 and 2009 to the present, in addition to serving the last two years on the Academic Senate.  I have also chaired several search committees, including the Assistant Vice President for Academic Programs in 2002.  I was appointed the University’s Faculty Athletics Representative by President Gordon in 2004.  In 2005, I was elected president of the largest academic society in my field.  I was re-elected Chair of the Department of Kinesiology in January 2010, having served for the previous three years.  In that capacity, I meet regularly with Dean Rikli and Associate Dean Kathy Koser, along with fellow department chairs in the College, and from that perspective I feel I have a good understanding of the goals and unique concerns of our college.  I maintain excellent relationships with colleagues across campus and have a strong commitment to collegial governance.  I seek to continue to represent the College of Health and Human Development in the Academic Senate.

Humanities

Chris Ruiz-Velasco

Chris Ruiz-Velasco It would be a privilege to serve on Academic Senate.  I feel that as a member of this academic community I have a responsibility to participate in the governance of our university.  We are undergoing a period of change and transformation, one that will shape us for years to come.  I would like to be involved in this process and with the issues that affect us all.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics

Sean Walker

Sean WalkerI am honored to have the opportunity to potentially represent the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. During my first six years in the College, I have been awarded early tenure, won the college teaching award, and maintained an active research program that includes both undergraduate and graduate students. I have also been active serving on department, college and university committees and have been chair of the University Information Technology Committee for the past two years.  As a senator representing the College of NSM I will work to represent our college and fight to maintain a collegial atmosphere supportive of research and teaching.

Vuryl Klassen

Phil Armstrong

Phil ArmstrongMy CSUF committee experience includes University Research Committee (2 years), University Graduate Committee (1 year), University Radiation Safety Committee (4 years, currently Chair), NSM Curriculum Committee.  At the Department level, I have served on every substantial Committee including Curriculum (Chair), Personnel, and Graduate (Chair). Thus I have considerable committee experience and a robust leadership background to take to the Senate.  As we deal with budget shortfalls of the last few years, two of very important issues I see for NSM faculty are: (1) To ensure that our faculty teaching hours get fully counted; it is crucial that the valuable time we spend with students doing research and out of class time in labs or in the field gets counted toward our teaching time.  (2) Student/faculty research opportunities continue to be funded by intramural grants at current and even higher levels of support.

Part-Time Faculty

Pete Evanow

Pete EvanowFor nine years, I have been privileged to teach at CSUF, first in the Communications School and now, additionally, in Mihaylo.  As part-time faculty members, we each have individual responsibilities, but as a whole, we are a strong group, and despite cutbacks, we still maintain a sizable footprint at Fullerton and Irvine.

I teach at both campuses, and while occasionally, I feel like I’m on my own, it’s good to know there are many of us doing the same thing.  I do believe we continue to need someone looking out for our interests when it comes to academic standards.  Our collective contribution has tremendous impact, and determining the future of our respective curricula helps influence the future of our students…and us!

Our mission remains essential.  By allowing me to be your voice in the Senate, I want to help make a difference in all our lives.  Thank you!

Peggy Shoar

Peggy Shoar My name is Peggy Shoar. I’m currently representing the part-time faculty on the Academic Senate at CSUF.  Please support my re-election so that I may continue to be a strong voice reinforcing the interests of all lecturers during these uncertain times.  I am committed to making sure that your voices and concerns do not go unheard.

Social Sciences

Ray Rast

Ray RastI am excited to represent the College of Social Sciences and to serve the Cal State Fullerton community as a member of the Academic Senate. I am finishing my third year as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History. I have served my department as a member of the Development Committee, Recruitment Committee, and Assessment Committee, and I serve the College of Humanities and Social Sciences as an Associate Director of the Center for Oral and Public History. I have developed good working relationships with colleagues in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and beyond. With your support, I will use my position in the Senate to fight for three things, each of which is now more important than ever: shared governance, transparency, and the maintenance of our university as a place fully dedicated to the cultivation of knowledge, understanding, and global awareness.

Stephen J. Stambough

At-Large

Kari Knutson-Miller

Kari Knutson-MillerI am an Associate Professor, Chair of the Department of Child and Adolescent Studies (CAS), and Vice-Chair of the Planning, Resource, and Budget Committee (PRBC).  I also serve in campus and professional roles to support teacher preparation, service-learning and internships, international education, and faculty-student research collaborations.  I regularly integrate field-based learning experience into my courses and publish research on participant academic and professional development outcomes.  In addition, I coordinate the CAS China Cohort experience where undergraduate students facilitate extra- and co-curricular activities for elementary school children enrolled in a summer English camp in China.  My commitment to high-quality teaching, research, and service activities has been recognized by both the campus and community.  Thank you for your consideration in this Academic Senate election.

Andi Stein

Andi SteinAs a 10-year member of the Department of Communications, I am committed to enriching the teaching and learning experiences for faculty and students. I am a strong advocate of building community on campus through collaborative partnerships between academic affairs and student affairs. My campus activities have included serving on the Academic Senate from 2006-2008 and on a number of Senate committees including the International Education Committee and Electronic RTP Ad Hoc Committee.

I have worked closely with the Dean of Students Office to promote academic integrity and civility on campus through the development of workshops for students and faculty. In addition, I have been involved in coordinating activities for the University Club and am a co-founder of the University Club Campus Book Group for faculty and staff.

It would be a privilege to serve the campus as an At-Large member of the Academic Senate.

Chris Manriquez

Chris ManriquezI have worked at Cal State Fullerton for over 15 years and am currently the Acting Chief Information Technology Officer. I have served, and continue to serve, on a number of campus-wide and Academic Senate committees. In addition, I represent the campus in various CSU system-wide committees. I have a reputation for problem solving, working collaboratively, and building consensus.  I am committed to working hard to help move the university forward.

More than ever, it is crucial for our entire university to be engaged in conversation to successfully step into the future we envision.  I believe in the strength of shared governance where members from all parts of our campus community can partner at the same table. I am dedicated to finding solutions that are both prudent in our present climate and that will advance the university’s long term vision.

Dorota Huizinga

Dorota HuizingaI joined Cal State, Fullerton in 1991 as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and served on many departmental, college and university –wide committees, including Personnel, Curriculum, General Education, Graduate Education, Research and PRBC. My faculty experience, combined with my recent administrative roles, places me in the unique position of understanding different perspectives, being able to build bridges and create collaborative solutions.  As the Associate Vice President for Graduate Programs and Research I seek funding to expand research and creative activities on our campus, and to support faculty and students in pursue of their intellectual endeavors. I would be honored to serve on the Academic Senate.

Doug Liverpool

John Carroll

John Carroll I am running for reelection because I believe the voice of the faculty should be central in every discussion about the future of our campus, especially since we are considering major programmatic and curricular changes.  As we struggle with the challenges of financial uncertainty, I am concerned about many interrelated campus issues.  How can we improve the educational experience for our students?  How can we improve the quality of life for our faculty?  How can we minimize the environmental impact our campus has locally and globally?  Answers to these questions require a long-term vision and a long-term commitment to the campus and the region.  If you believe, as I do, that these questions are central to the future of our campus, then please reelect me to the Academic Senate.

Matthew Jarvis

Heather Battaly

Heather BattalyI am an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department. I believe that it is vital for CSUF to emphasize excellent research and teaching, whether or not we are in a budget crisis. I hope to safeguard and expand resources for scholarship and for quality teaching. This may lead to some difficult discussions about sabbaticals and the impact of workload on teaching; but they are discussions we should have, and have together as colleagues in the Senate. In the ten years that I have been on the faculty, I have served on the Planning, Resource, and Budget Committee, the University Curriculum Committee, the Faculty Research Committee, the University Honors Board, on personnel committees for three different departments—Afro-Ethnic Studies, Philosophy, and Women’s Studies—and as a reviewer for the Department of Human Communications. I hope to work with faculty, administrators, and students from across the campus to achieve the goals above.

April Bullock

Brady Rhodes

Brady RhodesMy name is Brady P. Rhodes and I am asking for your vote as an at-large Academic Senator.  I am completing my second term as a senator and I am excited about the opportunity to be reelected for a third term.   I have a growing body of experience in collegial governance that includes acting as Chair of the Campus Facilities Committee, service as 3 term member and former Chair of the Academic Appeals Board, and service on several other committees at the University, College and Department levels.
In these difficult economic times, we must stand strong for deliberative, collegial governance.  We must not settle for quantity over quality.  We may be asked to do more with less, but we should not be asked to sacrifice that which is most important: an excellent educational experience for our students.  I will not hesitate to speak out for the best interests of ALL faculty.  I humbly ask for your vote on May 3-6, 2010.

Emily Bonney

Emily BonneyI am running for an at large seat in the Academic Senate because I think the diverse departments and colleges on this campus must work together to preserve the Fullerton experience. As a member of the Academic Senate and chair of the University Curriculum Committee I have demonstrated my commitment to collegiality and my willingness to work hard to preserve the Fullerton way.  We all value a broad liberal arts education as the foundation for any profession, and the diversity of programs and courses our school traditionally has offered are crucial components.  The budget crisis has revealed that state government, the chancellor’s office and even our own administration do not fully share those goals.  Collegial governance and the forceful articulation of a shared vision are key to maintaining the academic system that brought us together in the first place.  I believe I have a lot to offer to that process.

Pilar Valero-Costa

Pilar Valero-CostaAn experienced professor and tireless proponent of student interests, I am ideally suited to serve on CSUF’s Academic Senate.  I bring a background of traditional academic and ethical standards, and the practical experience to effectuate change and growth.  As part of the C.C. of ML&L, H&SS and GE, I have proposed and reviewed a large number of courses.  From serving on the department’s Hiring Committee, I received firsthand understanding of what our university needs in new faculty and will strive to develop and retain talent.

Our students deserve the very best.  With rising tuition costs and shrinking budgets, we must work to improve the quality of our education without overburdening the system.  If elected, I will work with the Academic Senate to seek innovative ways of achieving excellence through the policies, practices and standards we set.

I would be honored to serve on the Academic Senate and to helping the Titans grow.

Leah Brew

Leah BrewI have a strong history of leadership and service. Within CSUF I have participated in numerous activities such as: Department Chair; admissions committee; made significant curricular changes; advisor of national honor society; co-author of a Fulbright grant; President of the HHD/Education ULO organization; awards committees; Asian-American Program Council; and a senate subcommittee for electronic RTP process. Highlights of my external service include parliamentary and governance experience such as: helped to draft and pass a California Senate bill that established state-wide licensure for counselors; and was President of the major counselor education organization in the Western region (7 states). The unique quality I can offer is my ability as a counselor to negotiate and mediate among different perspectives and personalities. I am also attentive to details and have excellent follow-through in all my service responsibilities. Vote for me and allow me to serve as your senator.

Lynda Randall

Lynda RandallAs a candidate for Senator At-Large, I bring 20 years of experience as a professor on the campus, as well as four previous terms on the Senate and four years on the Senate Executive Committee.  As an at-large representative I would aim to consider diverse perspectives and apply my best logic to deliberations and decisions of the Senate.  I have recently served the campus in a variety of leadership roles, including initiating and directing the E-Learning Consortium and chairing the Ad Hoc Committee on Textbook Affordability.  I also chaired the Faculty Appeals Committee for Post-Promotion Increases.  Diplomacy is my strategy of choice, though I can speak out strongly and passionately on issues of importance. In times of serious budget constraints, the Senate requires a combination of new and experienced members who can work well together.  My strengths will be experience and enthusiasm.
