Chiara Gratton-Lavoie |
As our University struggles to maintain academic standards in the face of serious budget shortfalls, I intend to give my contribution to collegial governance, while representing the interests of the MCBE in the Academic Senate. I believe in the value of collegiality and inter-disciplinary collaboration and in open, constructive dialogue across all campus constituencies to determine ways to improve students’ learning experience and to create opportunities for faculty’s professional development. I have had the privilege to represent our College in the Academic Senate for the previous two years, and I welcome the opportunity to continue to serve.
|
|
Betty Chavis |
I would like to represent the MCBE on the University Academic Senate as an advocate for the College on issues that impact us. I also am interested in being involved in the decision-making process for University concerns and to participate in the discussion of University policies, both in regard to revision and confirmation. Finally, I see the academic Senate playing a critical role in curriculum improvement, shared governance enhancement, and improvement of the overall University environment. |

Communications
|
|
K. Janine Congalton |
I have served on various university committees including the Student Academic Life Committee, the Planning, Resource, and Budget Committee, and the Rollout of Access Technology Committee. My service on these committees has given me an understanding of university wide concerns. And my service on these committees has given me experience in working to manage university wide issues.
I understand the need to address issues related to recruitment and retention of faculty (e.g. faculty workload). And I understand that we must continue to ensure that our students have the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen professions and to participate in public advocacy. |

Janice Myck-Wayne |
This is my fourth year at CSUF. Over the past 4-years I have served on the College of Education Commencement Committee and Curriculum Committee. This year I am chair of the Curriculum Committee. I serve on many Special Education Department committees. In addition, I served on the Academic Elections Committee. I believe I have established a record of commitment to the COE. I welcome the opportunity to broaden my service to the COE and represent all of you on Academic Senate.

With a commitment to collegial governance, I welcome the opportunity to represent the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) in the Academic Senate. I currently serve on the Dean’s Faculty Advisory Committee, College Scholarship Committee, and represented the College as part of the University’s strategic planning process. I have been active within the Department of Health Science as well, most notably working to establish the forthcoming track in Global Health. I have also worked with faculty university-wide on a number of occasions, including as a Fellow for the CSUF Center for Sustainability, member of the CSUF team at the October 2010 WASC Assessment II Retreat, and member of the Health Promotion Research Institute. As a junior faculty member with broad experiences in leadership and productive collaboration, I feel uniquely positioned to represent the College of Health and Human Development to enhance faculty achievement over the professional trajectory.

Sean R. Hogan |
As a policy professor in the department of social work, I have a keen appreciation for the role policy and procedure play in effectively governing institutions and organizations. During my tenure at Cal State Fullerton, I have primarily focused on my development as an educator and scholar and now feel it is time to dedicate myself toward becoming more active in campus leadership. As a member of the academic senate, my goal is to represent the university community in policymaking decisions and contribute to the shared governance of our institution. I believe I have the skill set necessary to be an effective senator. Thank you for your consideration and support.

Humanities |

Emily Miller Bonney |
I am running for the Humanities seat in the Academic Senate because I am committed to representing the interests of our college in the larger debate about academic priorities and funding. Our college needs strong advocates in the increasingly adversarial exchanges about the future of the university (profit center or educational institution). Our college teaches more students than any other, and we need to be heard in the difficult discussions ahead. I can do that. I have chaired the University Curriculum Committee, served on the Academic Senate and chaired the H&SS Grants Committee demonstrating my commitment to collegiality and my willingness to work hard for the benefit of the University and the College. I look forward to receiving your support in this important election.

John Hickok |
I am happy to run again as the Academic Senator for the Library/Athletics/Counseling/Extended Ed (LACE) constituency. For the past several years I have served as the LACE Senator, continually having LACE interests in mind. For example, I voted for adding Athletics/Counseling/Extended Ed faculty to more Academic Senate committees...I encouraged adding a Librarian seat to the Academic Senate Library Committee....I gathered information and made referrals on Counselor range elevation questions...I polled LACE faculty on the 2008 2nd language requirement debate...and so on. As your LACE Senator, I will continue to seek your feedback and send you summary reports of relevant Senate doings (and archive them on the LACE website: http://users.library.fullerton.edu/jhickok/lace.htm). It is my job to advocate for you, and I will. Whatever issues affect or relate to LACE faculty, I will get to work on them. I look forward to continuing to serve you.

My CSUF committee experience includes University Research Committee (2 years), University Graduate Committee (1 year), University Radiation Safety Committee (4 years, currently Chair), NSM Curriculum Committee. At the Department level, I have served on every substantial Committee including Curriculum (Chair), Personnel, and Graduate (Chair). Thus I have considerable committee experience and a robust leadership background to take to the Senate. As we deal with budget shortfalls of the last few years, two of very important issues I see for NSM faculty are: (1) To ensure that our faculty teaching hours get fully counted; it is crucial that the valuable time we spend with students doing research and out of class time in labs or in the field gets counted toward our teaching time. (2) Student/faculty research opportunities continue to be funded by intramural grants at current and even higher levels of support.

Part-Time Faculty |

Curtis Williams |
I am asking for your support as a candidate for the Academic Senate representing CSUF’s part-time faculty. We need to have our voice heard during this time of severe budget challenges and I will do my best to represent you.
|
Pete Evanow |
For 10 years, I have been privileged to teach at CSUF, first in the Communications College and now, in Mihaylo. It also has been an honor to serve this year as one of your two representatives on the Academic Senate, and I’ve gotten more involved with CSUF as a result.
As part-time faculty members, we each have individual responsibilities, and whether we teach a single course or several, as a whole, we are a solid group. A strong connection to our campuses adds to the important roles we play as instructors.
We face a new era of cutbacks, but our purpose remains essential and our interests mutual. By allowing me to continue as your voice in the Senate, I want to support your efforts, ensure we are recognized for our contributions and help make a difference in all our lives and those of our students. Thank you for your vote! |

My continual involvement with faculty governance has been based around a few simple principles. I seek to:
- Allow faculty freedom, time, and a living wage to do creative, original, thoughtful research and innovative teaching.
- Reduce any obstacles to their being able to do so:
A. lower onerous teaching loads
B. eliminate paperwork and bureaucracy
C. resist thought-policing of curriculum
D. remove from administrative power those who would abuse it
E. demand increased resources and support for faculty
- Banish neoliberal education-“reform” ideologues and clueless bureaucrats from interfering with educators at the national, state, and local level.
- Dispense with the inappropriate mechanism of funding departments within the University as if competition between them was “healthy” and as if a corporatist model made sense for a public University.

I have had the privilege of serving as your representative for several years and would appreciate your continued support and vote. At-Large
|
|
S. Irene Matz |
Dear Colleagues,
I am vying for an“At Large” senate seat and am hopeful that you will feel I am qualified to represent all constituents on the Academic Senate.
I am a tenured associate professor in the Department of Human Communication Studies and since 2009, the associate dean for the College of Communications. As Joni Mitchell sang, “I have seen both sides now.” I have served on the Academic Senate for two different terms and on over 60 committees for the University, Colleges of Communications and Business as well as departments during my tenure of over 20 plus years.
If elected, I promise to listen to your voices, research issues, weigh the information, then cast the best vote for the betterment of all. My voice will mirror your concerns, innovations and values. You have my vow to work hard, attend meetings, listen to you, and conduct myself with respect and civility towards all. |
|
Brady Rhodes |
My name is Brady P. Rhodes and I am running for an at-large seat in the CSUF Academic Senate. I have previously been elected to the senate for 2 separate terms of one year, and I am excited about the opportunity to be elected again for a third term. I have a growing body of experience in collegial governance that includes acting as Chair of the Campus Facilities Committee, Chair of the International Education Committee, service as 3 term member and former Chair of the Academic Appeals Board, sitting on the Board of Directors of the Auxiliary Services Corporation, service on several other committees at the University, College and Department levels.
In these difficult economic times, we must stand strong for deliberative, collegial governance. We must not settle for quantity over quality. We may be asked to do more with less, but we should not be asked to sacrifice that which is most important: an excellent educational experience for our students. I will not hesitate to speak out for the best interests of all faculty. I humbly ask for your vote on May 2-5, 2011. |
|
Zvi Drezner |
I have served more than 10 years on the Academic Senate with five years on the Executive Committee. I strongly support faculty governance.
|
|
Kristi Kanel |
I have served as an Academic Senator for the past 7 years bringing some unique qualities to the senate floor such as a keen knowledge of social, psychological, cultural and political factors that must be kept in mind when creating, revising, and exploring new policies and procedures here at CSUF. I have served on Executive Committee twice, once as a member at large, and once as senate secretary which has given me a macro view of our university. I have a good grasp of the needs of all colleges, faculty, students, and administration. I have served on the Academic standards committee and the Faculty Affairs committee because I am committed to creating the best possible academic environment for our students and the best possible work environment for our faculty. I have invested my time in policies that affect students and faculty rights and needs.

|
Jessie Jones |
With productive working relationships with colleagues across campus and a strong commitment to collegial governance, I seek to be one of the University-wide faculty representatives for the Academic Senate. I have been a strong advocate for strong faculty governance on campus for nearly 20 years. Joining the faculty at Cal State Fullerton in 1992, I have served in a number of leadership roles throughout the campus, including Coordinator of Gerontology Academic Programs; Director, Fibromyalgia Research and Education Center; Co-director, Health Promotion Research Institute; Co-director, Center for Successful Aging. I have also served on several University committees (e.g., Senate Exec, Faculty Personnel, Faculty Development Center, University Advancement, Faculty Leaves).

|
John (Jack) Bedell |
I support an active Academic Senate that works closely with all members of our campus. Our top priority should be quality education that is accessible and rigorous. We need to support faculty scholarship including that which involves students wherever possible. The campus should strive to be a collegial place where people want to build their careers and stay. The Academic Senate needs to work to support the Colleges and the academic programs rather than get in their way. I consider service very important because it helps to shape the work place. As faculty, we need to work to see that CSUF honors academic traditions of governance at the same time we are open to new ideas, new colleagues and new programs. I deeply appreciate your consideration. I can be reached at jbedell@fullerton.edu.

Cynthia Gautreau |
My research and Doctorate in Education fuel my interests in faculty governance and equip me with the skills to address complex governance issues. As an assistant professor, I look forward to bringing the junior faculty perspectives to the Senate and eagerly anticipate representing the voice of the faculty.
|
|
Amir Dabirian |
Dear colleagues, I have been honored to serve as a member of Academic Senate from 2005 to 2009. I am eager to bring back my enthusiasm, energy and experiences at CSUF to the Senate. Teaching courses in Information System and Decision Sciences, Computer Science, Accounting and University Extension Education for 26 years gives a unique perspective to my current role in IT leadership, and enhances my ability to address faculty and administrative concerns. In addition, I have extensive experience serving on many campus Academic and Senate committees. I strive to position the campus to serve the future needs of our students, faculty, and staff. I have a strong appreciation for the importance of fairness, openness, and transparency in shared governance and collaborations. More than ever, it is a critical time in the history of our institution, and faculty must be prepared to successfully step into the future we envision.
|
|
Alexandro Jose Gradilla |
After 6 years at CSU Fullerton I continue to strive to build an academic and social community on campus that is inclusive of our key constituents—students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and community members. I remain committed to share governance and decision making. I support and vote for initiatives that strengthen the role of the faculty in the decision making process on campus. Furthermore, I work tirelessly with my colleagues across the campus to support diversity issues at various levels of the university (students, faculty and administration). I enjoy working with my fellow senators in service to the university. |
|
Doug Liverpool |
I have been involved with CSU Fullerton since 1967, the last twenty-five years as Counselor Faculty. I have served on Academic Senate and university committees over the years and have had the honor of serving as a senator at large for the past five years. In that capacity and as a member of the CFA chapter board I have come to know and appreciate the issues of concern to the faculty.
I believe the Academic Senate plays a crucial role in preserving quality education for our students and promoting beneficial working conditions for faculty and staff. I think the Academic Senate needs to be a force in addressing these issues locally on our campus and that would be my purpose if reelected. I seek your support for my candidacy for the Academic Senate and I pledge to continue bringing a fresh perspective to Senate deliberations. |
