The Six-Step Assessment Process
The Six-Step Assessment Process
Performance assessment is an ongoing process aimed at continuous improvement of key functions, operations, and services within a unit. At CSUF, assessment follows a 6-step cycle:
The Six Steps of Assessment
- Develop performance outcomes that align with the university's mission,
the university's strategic plan, and (if applicable) the unit’s parent division’s goals - Develop and implement methods of assessment involving direct and indirect and measures
- Determine criteria of success
- Collect and analyze data
- Plan (and execute) improvement actions
- Document assessment and improvement activities
Important questions to ask when conducting assessment:
- What should occur as a result of the core operations or services your unit performs?
- How effective are our operations/services? How do we know?
- What evidence do we need to know to determine how effective our operations/services are?
- How do we use the data to confirm or improve our services or operations?
- What impacts do our improvement actions have on the stakeholders?
- How are we documenting the assessment and improvement activities and results?
