SI Leader Minimum Qualifications

  • SI Leaders must be a current CSUF undergraduate or graduate student (undergraduates at least in second year at CSUF)
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Earned a B or higher in the course that you wish to provide SI for
  • Possess good interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to attend the mandatory pre-semester SI leader orientation and training days
  • Be able to work a total of 10 hours a week*
  • Submit all required materials of the SI leader application packet

*Please note that CSUF students are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week total between campus jobs.

SI Job Leader Description

Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are led by an SI Leader who is an exceptional student and has already mastered the course material. The SI Leader has been trained to facilitate group sessions wherein students can meet to improve their understanding of course material, review and discuss important concepts, develop study strategies and prepare for exams. The SI Leader provides two or three 50-75 minute sessions a week during which course readings, content, and material are brought together with effective learning strategies in a collaborative learning environment. Through the process of leading SI sessions, SI Leaders gain content knowledge as well as communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities of an SI Leader

Weekly Responsibilities

SI leaders are hired for a maximum of 10 hours a week, for the duration of the semester (16 weeks).

* The 10 hours are comprised of the following:

  • 2 ½-3 hours sitting in on course lectures
  • 2 ½-3 hours facilitating SI sessions
  • 1-hour weekly meeting with faculty liaison or SI Assistant Director
  • 3-4 hours dedicated to session planning, peer observations, and meetings with professor

*SI Leaders are also paid for hours attended/worked at mandatory pre-semester training.

SI Leader Obligations

  • Attending the mandatory pre-semester orientation and training every semester they are employed.
  • Attending ALL regularly scheduled class lectures/meetings for the class to which they are assigned.
  • Modeling successful student behavior. SI leaders must be on-time to class, attentive, and non-disruptive.
  • Facilitating 2-3 SI sessions each week for the course of the semester.
  • Being present, punctual, and prepared for all SI sessions. This includes creating activities, worksheets, and games to stimulate active collaborative learning.
  • Maintaining a professional attitude at all times.
  • Attending all mandatory weekly meetings/trainings with faculty liaison and/or SI Assistant Director.
  • Meeting with associated professor once a week.
  • Actively promoting SI sessions by making in-class announcements, writing SI session times/location on whiteboard, emailing students, etc.
  • Keeping track of hours and submitting timesheets on time.
  • Administering surveys to class as necessary and submitting paperwork to SI Assistant Director and/or faculty liaison in timely fashion.
  • Submitting end of semester SI attendance before finals week.
  • Additional administrative duties.

SI Leaders DO NOT:

  • Grade assignments, homework, exams, and so on.
  • Lecture or fill in as a substitute teacher for the instructor.
