Celebrating First-Gen Faculty, Staff, and Students

The Division of Academic Affairs has partnered with the Division of Student Affairs to celebrate first-generation students, faculty, and staff during First-Gen Appreciation Week in early November.

Several Academic Affairs units run information tables during the week's Resource Fair, which is attended by hundreds of Titans. In 2022, about half of the students surveyed said the fair gave them the opportunity to engage with faculty and staff.

The Provost's Office also hosts networking events during the week, including one that celebrates first-gen staff and faculty, and another designed to connect first-gen students with faculty who were also first-generation college students.

No Holding Back

CSUF is participating in the No Holding Back Community of Practice, a year-long collaboration among 12 community colleges and universities to examine each institution’s administrative hold policies, which can be administrative barriers to persistence and degree progress.

At CSUF, underrepresented students have a significantly higher number of holds than their non-URM peers. Through the work and analyses of No Holding Back, which is hosted by Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), CSUF can take strategic steps to reduce the reliance on holds to regulate student administrative actions and shift to more personalized support to reduce equity gaps that relate to student persistence.

The Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation

The Office of the Provost has provided a three-year seed grant to the Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation to support the work of engaging, supporting, and nourishing the Black and African American community on campus and beyond.

The colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, and the Arts are partners in this effort as IBII seeks to carry out its work inclusive of multiple disciplinary and inter-disciplinary persepctives.
