Curators: Elizabeth Little and Elizabeth C. Tallman
August 25 – September 13, 2008
Reception: Saturday, September 6, 5-8 p.m.
An entertaining exhibition that highlights the glorious history of matchbook cover design and includes both purely functional matchbooks—complete with savvy advertising—as well as contemporary artwork incorporating manipulated matches and matchbook covers. Historical matchbook covers are from the collection of Doug Fouquet. Artists included are Ellen Frances Tuchman, JK Keller and Jennifer DeDonato.

East Gallery

Trajectories
Curator: Michel Oren
August 25 – September 13, 2008
Reception: Saturday, September 6, 5-8 p.m.
The concept for this exhibition starts with the trajectory of a point “taking a walk,” as Paul Klee described it. Although this is not a show about maps, many of the artworks show map-like diagrams or designs: Christian Nold’s “emotion maps,” Josh Dorman’s paintings on antique maps, Stephen Cartwright’s charting of routes taken by various family members and Cherie Benner Davis’ “brain maps.”

Francisco Goya Los Caprichos
(Early First Edition)
November 1 – December 12, 2008
Reception: Saturday, November 1, 5-8 p.m.
This exhibition features an early first edition of Los Caprichos, a set of eighty etchings by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes published in 1799. It is one of the most influential series of graphic images in the history of Western art. Included for comparison are seven other works by Goya. To demonstrate the broad influence of Los Caprichos, the exhibition also includes a drawing by Edward Hagedorn, circa 1925, after Los Caprichos plate 51, “Se repulen,” and eight etchings by contemporary artist Enrique Chagoya, The Return to Goya’s Caprichos, published in 1999.
