Members of the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band and University Band study and perform music as part of an overall university curriculum that prepares musicians for lives as artists, teachers and businessmen. With a strong emphasis on musical performance, the students in these ensembles are also part of an ongoing effort to perpetuate and maintain a great American cultural tradition.
Bands and Wind Ensembles have been a part of the American cultural fabric since our country’s beginning. More important, bands have been a part of public education in America since the 1800s. In fact, music education in America is the most complex, complete and oldest existing form of public music instruction in the history of civilization.
The literature for band and wind ensemble music encompasses virtually every musical style of western civilization. The wind ensemble repertoire predates the orchestral repertoire and contains some of the best music of the finest composers known to man. The Cal State Fullerton bands and wind ensembles perform the best music from this repertoire, but choose to emphasize literature that reflects an American influence.
Through the wind band medium, composers such as Sousa, Gershwin, Bernstein, Ives, Stravinsky, Ellington, Copland, Harbison, Adams and countless others have shaped a musical language that is uniquely American. This music is marked by rhythmic vitality and melodic and harmonic complexity. The sound of the music is an outgrowth of military music, jazz, rhythm and blues, folk music and western classical music. It is easily the most intriguing and interesting “classical music” of our time.
Our purpose in studying and performing this music is to develop an appreciation for the music of our time, to further the tradition of excellence in wind performance at Cal State Fullerton as well as the traditions of the American Concert Band, and to provide an educational foundation from which our students and audience can contribute to the cultural landscape of society.
Membership in the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band is determined by audition. Auditions are held the first week of classes and the faculty assigns placement in the ensemble. For more information please contact Dr. Fennell.
Other performance opportunities include Jazz Ensembles, the University Symphony Orchestra, the Diverse Instrument Ensemble and a variety of chamber ensembles.
