Robert M. Istad has prepared choruses for world-renowned conductors including Esa-Pekka Salonen and Sir Andrew Davis (for the Los Angeles Philharmonic), Carl St.Clair (for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra), Nicholas McGegan (for the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra) and Keith Lockhart (for the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra), as well as Marin Alsop, George Fenton, John Alexander, William Dehning, and David Lockington. Istad is Director of Choral Studies and conducts the University Singers and Chamber Choir, in addition to teaching conducting courses, advanced interpretation and literature. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, his Master of Music degree in choral conducting from California State University, Fullerton, his DMA in choral music at the University of Southern California. He has studied conducting with Dr. William Dehning, John Alexander and Dr. Jon Hurty. Istad is also assistant conductor of the Pacific Chorale, and serves as music director for the Irvine United Congregational Church.
