Katherine Powers, associate professor and graduate program adviser, teaches music history, musicology and directs the performing ensemble Collegium Musicum. Her research focuses on music of the Renaissance, the study of music depicted in art and women in music. Her books include Angel Musicians in Italian Art, 1450 to 1530: A Catalogue of Madonna Paintings for the Research Center of Music Iconography, as well as Musica Spirituale (1563) for A-R Editions, and is working on a book-length study of Swedish women composers. Powers has articles in Pietosi Affetti and in Art and Music in the Early Modern Period and elsewhere. She is associate editor of the journal Music in Art. Powers has received awards from the Fulbright Commission, Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, University of California and Royal Swedish Academy of Music. She earned degrees from UC Santa Barbara (Ph.D. musicology, M.A. musicology, M.A. clarinet performance), where she was a Regent’s Fellow and teaching assistant, and from Cal State Long Beach (B.M. music history).
