CHE-YEN CHEN, Professor of Music

Brian ChenChe-Yen Chen has established himself as a prominent recitalist, chamber, and orchestral violist. Chen was the first prizewinner of the 2003 William Primrose Viola Competition and also the winner of the 2003 Lionel Tertis Viola Competition. Currently the principal violist of the San Diego Symphony, Chen has appeared as guest principal violist with numerous orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He has been described by the Strad Magazine as a musician whose "tonal distinction and essential musicality produced an auspicious impression." Chen is the founding member of the Formosa Quartet, a prize-winning string quartet. Chen has degrees from The Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of music and has studied with Michael Tree, Joseph de Pasquale, and Paul Neubauer. In addition to his new position as professor of viola at California State University, Fullerton, Chen has also taught at Indiana University- South Bend, University of California San Diego, San Diego State University, and McGill University.
