LUTHER HUGHES, Instructor in Music

Luther HughesLuther Hughes teaches electric and double bass at Cal State Fullerton. In addition he is involved in the music business in a number of ways: As a leader, he currently tours and records with his band "Luther Hughes & The Cannonball-Coltrane Project." The band's fourth cd "Things Are getting Better" (released in Jan. 2011) peaked at number 2 on the national jazz radio chart. In a career spanning over 40 years he has performed/ recorded with jazz legends such as Gene Harris, Nancy Wilson, Mundell Lowe, Joe Henderson, Carmen MacRae, Willie Bobo, Horace Silver, Harold Land, Don Ellis, Joe Pass , Louis Bellson , Hampton Hawes and many more. As a record producer and music publisher, Hughes heads up Primrose Lane Music, which he founded in 2004. As an educator he has over 30 years experience. In addition to Cal State Fullerton he also teaches at Saddleback College as well as his private students. Luther has also taught at Cal State Long Beach; U.C. Irvine; The Musicians' Institute; Golden West College and Rio Hondo College. He has conducted clinics, workshops and lectured at high schools and universities across the U.S. Luther also served as So. Cal. Regional Director for Bruce Forman's JazzMasters Workshop . In the 80's he hosted two radio shows on Jazz FM 88.1 in Southern California.  He can be seen on seven episodes of "Star Trek Deep Space Nine" as well an episode of "Boston Legal."
