LAURA LOHMAN, Associate Professor of Music

Laura LohmanLaura Lohman, an associate professor, teaches courses in music history, world music, and popular music in the School of Music and the Honors Program. Her research includes specializations in the music of the Middle East and communication among musicians. Her most recent publication, Umm Kulthum: Artistic Agency and the Shaping of an Arab Legend, 1967-2007 (Wesleyan University Press, 2010), explores how the legendary Egyptian singer expanded her international fame and shaped her legacy following the Six-Day War, as well as the conflicting ways that her image and music have been interpreted since her death in 1975. Dr. Lohman's work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the U.S. Department of Education, Rotary Foundation International, and the American Musicological Society. She completed her education at the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D. musicology), the University of California at Santa Barbara (ethnomusicology), the Royal Northern College of Music (flute performance), and Indiana University (B.M. in flute performance).
