LAURA LOHMAN, Associate Professor of Music

Laura LohmanLaura Lohman combines her backgrounds in musicology and ethnomusicology to teach courses in music history, world music, and music research in the School of Music and the Honors Program. With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Musicological Society, her own research has focused on American and Middle Eastern music. Her first book, Umm Kulthum: Artistic Agency and the Shaping of an Arab Legend, 1967-2007 (Wesleyan University Press, 2010), explores how the legendary Egyptian singer expanded her international fame and shaped her legacy following the Six-Day War, and the conflicting ways that her image and music have been interpreted since her death in 1975. Dr. Lohman is completing a second book on American music and politics in the early national period. In addition to her scholarship and teaching, she has been continuously involved in collegial governance at CSUF, where she has provided leadership and coordination in diverse areas such as faculty affairs, facilities, curriculum, advising, and student recruitment. She earned the Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Indiana University and Doctor of Philosophy in musicology from the University of Pennsylvania, in addition to graduate study in flute performance and ethnomusicology from the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of California at Santa Barbara.
