Laura Lohman, assistant professor of ethnomusicology and musicology, teaches courses in music history, world music and popular music at Cal State Fullerton. Specializing in music of the Middle East, Orientalism and communication, she has published her research in the United States, Egypt and Europe. She is currently writing a book on the late career and reception history of the Egyptian female singer Umm Kulthum, titled Umm Kulthum: Artistic Agency and the Shaping of a Legend, 1967-2004. She has received research/education funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Jacob K. Javits Graduate Fellowship from the U. S. Department of Education, and a Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholarship. She completed her education at the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D. musicology), the University of California at Santa Barbara (ethnomusicology), the Royal Northern College of Music (flute performance) and Indiana University (B.M. with high distinction in flute performance).
