(Make the Match)
State why you are writing, name the position or type of work for which you are applying. Remember to mention how you heard of the job opening or organization, and if you are being referred by someone, be sure to include their name.
(Make the Case)
Explain why you are interested in working for this employer. Identify your reasons for desiring this type of work with this specific company. If you have relevant work experience or related education, be sure to point it out, but do not reiterate your entire resume. In the absence of directly relevant skills or experience, emphasize the transferable skills or abilities that relate to the job for which you are applying. The objective or profile statement on your resume makes a good outline for this section of the letter. The letter does not need to contain your entire life story, only what is most relevant to the position you are targeting. Use hightened language and strong verbs to connect your experiences to the job description. Do this in a confident manner and remember that the reader will view your letter as a sample of your writing skills.
(Make the Close)
You may refer the reader to your enclosed resume, or whatever media you are using to illustrate your training, interests, and experiences. Write an appropriate closing to pave the way for the interview. This may be done by indicating the action or steps you will take to initiate an interview date, or in the case of not having access to direct contact information, by clearly indicating your desire to arrange an interview.
