What is America Reads and Counts (ARC)? ARC is a program of the Center for Internships & Community Engagement at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF), designed to improve the reading and math skills of 6th – 12th grade students by way of on-site tutoring. ARC Tutors are placed in middle schools and afterschool programs under the guidance of classroom teachers or afterschool program staff.

What does the ARC Tutor do? The goal of an ARC tutor is to provide extra direction and one-on-one attention to students in math and reading in order to better prepare them to succeed in school. ARC Tutors are paid at a rate of $10.00/hour and are employed as part-time employees of the Center for Internships & Community Engagement. An Assistant Coordinator position is also available.

1. Resume building experience in tutoring, interpersonal communication skills, and mentoring.
   
2. Network with administrators and key program staff in local schools and community-based organizations.
   
3. Enhance your resume by actively serving your community.
   
4. Receive personal and professional development skills through training.
   
5. Federal Work Study (FWS) earnings are not counted as income in determining your future financial aid eligibility.
   
6. Option to become AmeriCorps Member through the Students and Service Program and earn an additional $1,000 Educational Award for school tuition or loans.

Requirements

What are the requirements to become an ARC Tutor? In order to be a ARC Tutor, you must have a desire to teach children and fulfill the following requirements:

1. Receive a minimum of $2,000.00 Federal-Work-Study.
   
2. Must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
   
3. Possess maturity, respect for youth, ability to listen with patience and an open mind.
   
4. Knowledge of English grammar, basic reading and math skills for the grade level working with.
   
5. Previous tutoring experience with middle school children desired.
   
6. Have reliable transportation.

ARC Tutors who would like the option to earn the additional $1,000 education award by serving as a Students in Service AmeriCorps member are also required to:

1. Complete all enrollment paperwork.
   
2. Attend a mandatory Orientation.
   
3. Be able to complete 300 hours in one year, which averages to 8-12 hours per week.
   
4. Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
