The goal to "recruit and retain a high-quality and diverse faculty and staff" was first set in Cal State Fullerton’s Strategic Plan 2013-2018 and has been carried forward into the Strategic Plan 2018-2023Opens in new window . Objectives of the goal include increasing the number of tenured and tenure-track faculty and full-time staff, with a focus on those from historically underrepresented (UR) groups.

Diversity of all faculty has increased. The number of UR instructional faculty increased from 243 in 2013 to 313 in 2020, with Hispanic and Latino faculty seeing the largest increase of 65 faculty members. Total Black and African American faculty increased by 11 faculty members. Non-instructional UR faculty including counselors, librarians and athletics, increased from 23 to 29 over the same period, with Hispanic and Latino non-instructional faculty seeing the largest increase of 7 faculty members. Overall, from 2013 to 2020, the percentage of UR faculty increased by 3.1 percentage points to 16.4% of the campus faculty, demonstrating the increasing diversity.

The full-time equivalent (FTE) of tenured and tenure-track (T/TT) faculty increased from 729.3 in 2013 to 820.8 in 2020. A corresponding increase in tenure density, the ratio between T/TT FTE and all faculty FTE, from 54.2% to 55.9% was achieved. Although the percentage increase seems small, it’s a large step that can help the university recruit and maintain diverse faculty, particularly T/TT faculty.

Staff diversity has increased as well. The number of UR staff increased from 552 in 2013 to 653 in 2020, with Hispanic and Latino staff seeing the largest increase of 97 staff members. Overall, the percentage of UR staff increased by 3.8 percentage points to 37.9% of the campus staff.

Cal State Fullerton Celebrates Growth - 9/29/2020

As the Fall semester kicks off here at Cal State Fullerton, the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research is proud to share some positivity during these uncertain times.

It was a record-breaking year for degrees awarded in 2019/2020. The overall number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students (X,XXX) reached a new high. This high included new records for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees awarded for both Hispanic women and men (see Table 1). The records set are part of a steady incline of Hispanic graduates that have taken place over the last few years. This is a welcomed trend as the University continues to serve as an HSI institution.

The achievement is also part of larger success for Cal State Fullerton in setting a new record for degrees awarded to underrepresented students (see Figure 1 or Table 2), including any student who has identified their race/ethnicity as African American, American Indian or Native American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander.

Cal State Fullerton also ranked as a top 20 Regional West University by US News & World Report. Our accolades in the report include ranking number nine in the social mobility category and number five in the most innovative category. The success in the rise of degrees awarded attributes to social mobility rankings as degrees tend to allow for upward mobility for generations to come.

Degree data is collected and updated every year. It can be viewed and downloaded via the dashboards on the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research’s website at http://www.fullerton.edu/data/institutionalresearch/ . Viewers can study the trends described in this article and more by exploring the dashboards and adjusting dashboard filters to get specific information. Data from the last eleven years is available and can be used for grant applications, Program Performance Reviews, and more.
