Keynote Address
Speaker: Mohamed Abousalem, MBA, P.Eng, President of Keck Graduate Institute
Speaker Bio: Dr. Mohamed Abousalem is the third president of Keck Graduate Institute, assuming leadership on July 1, 2024. With a distinguished career spanning academia, private industry, and nonprofit organizations, he has been a catalyst for technology innovation and research growth. As the inaugural Vice President for Research and Innovation at San Jose State University, he significantly expanded the research enterprise, increasing funding from $47M to $84M in five years. Previously, he led technology transfer and commercialization at UC Santa Cruz, driving entrepreneurship and state-funded initiatives. Dr. Abousalem also served as CEO of TECTERRA, investing in over 200 startups and generating significant economic impact. His expertise lies in satellite positioning and GPS technology, holding a BS from Alexandria University, an MS and PhD in geomatics engineering from the University of Calgary, and an MBA from Santa Clara University.
Abstract: Dr. Abousalem will explain the concepts of biologics and bioprocessing, exploring their significance in the rapidly evolving biotechnology and advanced manufacturing industries. He will discuss the diverse career opportunities available in these fields, emphasizing the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in various functional areas. Additionally, Dr. Abousalem will outline academic pathways for students from different majors, providing guidance on how they can transition into careers within biotechnology and advanced manufacturing. His insights will offer valuable direction for students seeking to align their educational background with the growing demand for professionals in these innovative industries.

This a dedicated platform for meaningful collaboration between industry professionals and academic leaders, including high school teachers, college faculty (from both 2-year and 4-year institutions), school administrators, and key decision-makers. This forum aims to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas to align biotechnology and biomanufacturing education with industry needs, address emerging technologies, and explore workforce development strategies. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the forum seeks to strengthen partnerships, advance educational pathways, and equip the next generation with the skills required to thrive in the evolving biotechnology landscape.
SME Zone (Pavilion A)
The SME Zone offers a unique opportunity to connect with the local chapters of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) from the Southern California region. Representatives and chapter officers from these three active chapters will be available to discuss the latest industry trends, educational resources, and career opportunities in manufacturing.
