College of Communications

Scholarships listed present a selection of those awarded by sponsoring organizations in conjunction with the College of Communications faculty. In addition, communications majors can apply for a wide range of scholarships and awards offered by a host of outside private organizations and professional societies. Information about scholarships and awards is located on the department’s scholarship bulletin board on the fourth floor of College Park.
Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May.
Alumni Association Scholarship for Communications Majors
Amount: $500
Established by: This scholarship was established to encourage co-curricular involvement and to promote service, academic achievement, and leadership in the college. Funding is provided by the College of Communications in partnership with the Cal State Fullerton Alumni Association. Two scholarship recipients will be selected and must serve in two or more leadership areas during the next academic year: 1) hold a top-level position in a major campus activity, 2) serve on the SOAR-Interclub Council, 3) serve as an officer in a student club, or 4) serve as an ambassador for department/college events.
Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing full-time students in Communication, Radio-TV-Film, or Human Communication who are pursuing an undergraduate or a graduate degree.

Myles Atlas Memorial Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Rhonda Atlas Garside, widow of Myles Atlas, in memory of her husband’s long and successful career in the advertising business.
Open to: This scholarship is open to sophomore or junior Communications majors in the advertising concentration.
Criteria: Career interest in advertising management or media buying

Clara and Tony Fellow Scholarship
Amount: Varies
Established by: This scholarship was established by Dr. Tony Fellow, chair of the Department of Communications, and his wife—Clara Potes-Fellow, director of media relations, Chancellor’s Office, the California State University System—in recognition of their strong support of students and the CSU System’s international programs, which contribute to a greater understanding of world cultures and, hopefully, world peace.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students interested in a career in journalism or public relations who will be enrolling in one of the university’s semester or summer international programs.

Future in Tourism Scholarship
Amount: $2,500 (dependent upon funding)
Established by: This scholarship was established in 2005 and is funded by the Orange County Tourism Council. The scholarship will assist people who have decided to make a change for the better, through education. The Future in Tourism Award was created for students entering their junior or senior year at CSUF, with a declared emphasis in entertainment/tourism. The committee will consider information regarding your prior employment in the entertainment/tourism industry.
Open to: This scholarship is open to newly accepted or continuing students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in entertainment/tourism.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA • Good Academic Standing • Orange County resident • Age 18 or over • Quality of Essay

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the application available from the web at www.oc-of.org or call (949) 553-4202; 2) Prepare a typed essay (minimum 200 words) that describes your academic plans, why you have chosen to have a career in the entertainment/tourism industry and how this scholarship funding will impact your situation; 3) Obtain two letters of recommendation from individuals who will describe how they have come to know you and will add what they see as major strengths and limitations in your character and academic abilities. One letter must be from a professional in the entertainment/tourism industry. Have each letter placed in a separate sealed envelope with the writer’s signature over the back flap of the envelope; and 4) Mail the application materials to the Orange County Tourism Council Scholarship Fund, Orange County Community Foundation, 30 Corporate Park, Suite 410, Irvine, CA 92606.

Gary Granville Memorial Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship was established by former students, family and friends of the late Gary Granville, lecturer and Daily Titan adviser, to recognize a student who has made significant contributions to the Daily Titan. The scholarship will be awarded based on your outstanding performance as an editor or as a staff reporter on the Daily Titan campus student newspaper.
Open to: This scholarship is open to junior or senior Communication majors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA • Quality of published work

Thomas D. Hanlon Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $2,500
Established by: This scholarship was established by the Palm Springs Desert Resorts Convention and Visitors Authority in honor of Thomas Hanlon, who was a tourism industry pioneer and innovative marketing expert. He served as executive director for the Authority for 20 years. The winner will be presented with the award at the annual luncheon in February in Palm Desert.
Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate communication majors at any college level who are pursuing a career
in Tourism.
Criteria: 3.0 GPA • Financial need

Terry Hynes Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Terry Hynes, former chair of CSUF’s Department of Communications and currently assistant vice president of the Office of University Relations at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Open to: This scholarship is open to Communication majors who will be seniors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton.

V.J. Lovero Photojournalism Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to assist in educating students who have demonstrated career promise in photography. The scholarship honors the memory of renowned sports photographer V.J. Lovero. Applicants must be enrolled for at least one semester during the next academic year and they must demonstrate professional promise.
Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing Photo Communications majors.
Criteria: Quality of portfolio
Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Submit a portfolio of ten images on a CD that includes sports and portrait photography, and demonstrates your passion for a specific subject, sports or otherwise; and 3) Submit completed application and portfolio to CP450.

Orange County Public Relations Society of America Gavotto Scholarship
Amount: $1,000 (dependent upon funding by PRSA)
Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Richard Gavotto, a former public relations instructor at Cal State Fullerton, and administered by the Orange County Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Applicants must be active members of the student organization PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America).
Open to: This scholarship is open to full-time, junior Public Relations majors who are pursuing an undergraduate degree

Tom Pasqua Memorial Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Pasqua, a journalism professor at Southwestern College in Chula Vista and in the Cal State Fullerton Communications Department during the 1970’s.
Open to: This scholarship is open to incoming community college transfer students majoring in journalism

Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by CSUF Professor Dr. Lynne Schafer Gross to recognize and honor students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. Dr. Gross is one of the most prolific academic authors in the area of Radio-TV-Film.

Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Women in Film. The Women in Film scholarship may not be awarded at the discretion of the Women in Film organization. WIF’s purpose is to empower, promote, nurture, and mentor women in the film industry through a network of valuable contacts, events and programs. The selected recipient must be concentrating the majority of their courses in any area of film production
