These scholarships have been established to assist students majoring in programs offered by the College of Natural Science and Mathematics.

 

Alumni Association Natural Sciences and Mathematics Scholarship

Amount: Two $500 scholarships

Established by: This scholarship was established by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics to recognize academic achievement. Funds are paid in August after verification of enrollment and fee payment.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing students in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Criteria: 3.0 GPA • Scholastic achievement • Financial need

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (or have one on file) for establishing financial need; and 3) Submit the application to the Assistant Dean’s Office, MH-488, (714) 278-4158.

Jewel Plummer Cobb Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established in the name of former CSUF President Jewel Plummer Cobb, a biological scientist, who encourages scholarship and scientific study. Funds are disbursed in two equal payments; the first disbursement of $250.00 is available in late August with proof of registration and fee payment for Fall. The second disbursement of $250.00 is available in late January with proof of registration and fee payment for Spring.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time, outstanding, Biological Science majors; may be a sophomore, junior or senior with at least one year remaining at CSUF.

Criteria: Scholastic achievement

A. James Diefenderfer Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established in 1990 to honor A. James Diefenderfer, the former Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Open to: This scholarship is open to students with a declared major in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Criteria: Scholastic achievement • Financial need

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (or have one on file) for establishing financial need; and 3) Submit application to the Assistant Dean’s Office, MH-488, (714) 278-4158.

NSM Boeing Scholar Award

Amount: $1,000

Established by: This scholarship was established by the Boeing Company to recognize academic achievement in mathematics and the sciences. The award is presented at the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Awards Banquet in May.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing, full-time, declared majors in NSM; may be a sophomore, junior or senior with at least one year remaining at CSUF.

Criteria: Scholastic Achievement

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare a letter indicating your interests, your academic background (including all university science courses and grades) and your future goals in mathematics or the sciences; 3) Obtain two letters of recommendation addressed to the Scholarship Award Committee, at least one of which must be from a CSUF faculty member; and 4) Submit application materials to MH-488, (714) 278-4158.

Reginald Newton Newkirk Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established to honor the memory of a promising pre-medical student, Reginald (Ricky) Newton Newkirk. Ricky was an outstanding athlete and an excellent student whose career was tragically shortened by his unsuccessful battle with cancer. The scholarship is to help defray the cost of health profession program applications. The recipient will be selected by the Health Professions Committee.

Open to: This scholarship is open to juniors, seniors and post-baccalaureate students entering the health professions.

Criteria: 3.25 GPA • Standardized MCAT or DAT test scores

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE

Boeing Scholarship for Biological Science

Amount: $1,000

Established by: This scholarship was established by the Boeing Company to recognize academic achievement in the biological sciences.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing, full-time, declared majors in Biological Science; may be a sophomore, junior or senior with at least one year remaining at CSUF.

Criteria: Scholastic Achievement

L. Jack Bradshaw Scholarship in Immunology

Amount: $1,000

Established by: This scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of Dr. L. Jack Bradshaw, former faculty member of the Department of Biological Science, who retired in 1988 after more than 20 years of teaching and mentoring students. A specialist in immunology, Dr. Bradshaw gained attention for his research endeavors on Ehrlich ascites malignancy, a common cancer in mice.

Open to: This scholarship is open to upper division undergraduate or graduate students who are planning a career that will utilize theoretical or practice application of immunology.

Criteria: Merit • Application letter

Dr. and Mrs. Donald B. Bright Environmental Scholarship

Amount: $2,000 (approx.)

Established by: This scholarship was established in 1994 in memory of the late Donald B. Bright, former faculty member and Chair of the Department of Biological Science. Dr. Bright’s professional energy in the later part of his career was devoted to his consulting firm, which assisted both the private and public sectors in solving various problems associated with the environment including biological studies, habitat restoration, hazardous waste issues, air quality issues, and land use planning concerns. While Dr. Bright served as President and CEO of his successful company, he maintained close ties with CSUF and the Fullerton Arboretum, often making special contributions of time and resources to both. He never lost his passion for teaching or his belief in the power of a good education.

Open to: This scholarship is open to upper division and graduate Biology majors whose career plans include employment in the area of environmental science.

Rachel Carson Scholarship in Conservation Biology

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established in 1990 to encourage Biology majors who express an interest in and an aptitude for a career in the field of conservation biology. Conservation biology is an emerging discipline grown out of the urgency for preserving the earth’s dwindling biological diversity and restoring its damaged habitats and communities.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time sophomore, junior or senior Biological Science majors.

Criteria: Merit • Letter of interest

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare a typed, single-spaced letter of 500 or fewer words describing the applicant’s interest in conservation biology and aptitude for a career in the field; 3) Provide a list of courses taken and grades received in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics; 4) Obtain two letters of recommendation, at least one of which should be from a CSUF faculty member; and 5) Submit application materials to Chair, Department of Biological Science, MH-282, (714) 278-3614.

Coppel Graduate Science Award

Amount: Up to $500 (more than one award may be given)

Established by: This scholarship was established by Lynn and Claude Coppel in Fall 1995. Prior to her retirement in 1992, Mrs. Coppel worked for 24 years as the science reference librarian at CSUF. Her husband, Claude, was a research supervisor with Chevron Oil Field Research in the production department. Mr. Coppel served in this position for 27 years prior to his retirement in 1992. Chevron Oil Field Research is a matching donor for this scholarship.

Open to: This scholarship is open to graduate students in Biology.

Hillman and McClanahan Scholarship in Plant or Animal Physiological Ecology

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Dr. Stanley Hillman, Professor of Biology, and Chair of the Department of Biology, Portland State University, who graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a Master’s Degree. Dr. Lon McClanahan, Dr. Hillman’s Master’s thesis advisor, has donated matching funds to support this scholarship. Dr. Hillman’s gift is a token of his appreciation to the Department of Biological Science. Dr. McClanahan’s contribution continues his commitment to the importance of physiological ecology research.

Open to: This scholarship is open to Biology graduate students who are engaged in research in the field of either plant or animal physiological ecology.

Criteria: Merit • Originality of essay and the scientific contribution of the research project

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare a request no more than two pages in length describing research and how the funds would help accomplish the thesis research project; 3) Obtain two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the applicant’s thesis advisor; 4) Prepare a list of past science courses and grades; and 5) Submit application and materials to Chair, Department of Biological Science, MH-282, (714) 278-3614.

Judith A. Presch Endowment Desert Research Scholarship

Amount: $250 (and one year waiver of fees for use of the Desert Studies Center facilities)

Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Judith A. Presch, Human Resource Specialist and Desert Studies Center Supporter. Two awards are given: one to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate student. Applications are received and evaluated by the Research Award Committee of the Desert Studies Consortium. The award is announced in late November.

Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing research in the Mojave Desert.

Criteria: Merit • Research purpose

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the separate application, available from the Desert Studies Center Office, MH-387, (714) 278-2428, include name, address, year in college, current GPA and the title of your proposed research project; 2) Provide the name, address, phone number and email address of the sponsoring faculty member of your research; 3) Write a one page statement on the purpose of your proposed research; 4) Write a two page description of your proposed research; 5) Obtain two letters of recommendation; and 6) Submit all materials to MH-387.

David L. Walkington Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $800

Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum and was established to honor the memory of Dr. David L. Walkington, late director of the Fullerton Arboretum. This scholarship may not be awarded more than twice to the same individual.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time upper division or graduate students majoring in Biological Science or related fields which emphasize botany, ethno-botany, medicinal plant usage, ornamental horticulture, plant adaptation, the genetic engineering of plants, biogeography and environmental studies.

Criteria: GPA • Community activities • Financial need

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare a letter of interest including a statement of future goals; 3) Provide a copy of all college transcripts; 4) Prepare a statement of financial need; 5) Obtain two letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from a CSUF faculty member; and 6) Submit application materials to the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum, (714) 278-4010.

Jerome Wilson Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $700 (approx.)

Established by: This scholarship is named in memory of Dr. Jerry Wilson, former professor of biology, and is awarded annually to one undergraduate and one graduate student in biology. Students with an interest in genetics are especially encouraged to apply.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing undergraduate and graduate Biology majors.

Criteria: Scholastic achievement

CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

Robert C. Belloli Future Chemistry Teacher Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established by Professor Belloli to provide encouragement and support to students preparing to teach Chemistry in grades 7—12. An ad-hoc committee will review the student’s academic record and the information provided on the scholarship application.

Open to: This scholarship is open to graduating senior majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry committed to becoming chemistry teachers in junior high or high school.

Criteria: Formal application to Secondary Credential in Chemistry program • Passed CSET in Chemistry

Glenn Nagel Scholarship

Amount: $3,500

Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Glenn Nagel, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, to support research experiences for undergraduates. A departmental committee will select the recipient

James Sternberg Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. James Sternberg, a distinguished scientist with Beckman Instruments to assist students who excel in academic performance and show promise in research. The department chair and graduate advisor will make the selection. Finalists may be interviewed.

Open to: This scholarship is open to a first year graduate students who is completing research.

Criteria: Academic achievement • Academic potential

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Provide a letter of recommendation from your faculty mentor; 3) Submit application materials to the CSUF Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, MH-580; and 4) If selected, complete interview.

Glorya Welch Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Established by: This scholarship is named in memory of Glorya Welch, whose estate provided the endowment to fund the scholarship.

Open to: This scholarship is open to new community college transfer students based on their first semester at CSUF in a minimum of 6 units of chemistry or biochemistry major coursework.

Criteria: GPA • Academic achievement • Academic potential • Financial need

Established by: This scholarship was established by the Boeing Company to recognize academic achievement in the geological sciences.

Dr. Margaret Skillman Woyski Award

Amount: Approximately $300

Established by: This scholarship was established through the generosity of Dr. Woyski, her family, and the alumni and friends of the Department of Geological Sciences. The award is made annually based on the recommendation of the entire full-time faculty.

Open to: This scholarship is open to declared Geology majors.

Criteria: 2.5 GPA for the previous academic year • Financial need • Outstanding academic achievement • Service to the department/university

Actuarial Studies Scholarship

Amount: $500

Established by: The scholarship was established by the Center for Insurance Studies to recognize academic achievement.

Open to: This scholarship is open to students enrolled in Math 390, Introduction to Actuarial Science.

Applied Math Scholarship in Honor of Lila B. and Major Theodore Hromadka

Amount: $250

Established by: This scholarship was established by Dr. Theodore Hromadka in honor of his parents to recognize the best first-year graduate student in the Applied Graduate Program. The recipient is selected by the graduate program faculty.

Open to: Nomination for this scholarship is open to first-year Applied Graduate Program students.

The Rose Klein Award

Amount: $100

Established by: This scholarship is by nomination only. It was established to recognize academic achievement in the study of mathematics and to honor students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance in completion of the course, Algebra and Probability for the Secondary Teacher, Math 401. Nominations are made by faculty in the Department of Mathematics.

Open to: Nomination for this award is open to enrolled students in Cal State Fullerton’s course section, Math 401

Criteria: 3.2 GPA • Academic achievement

Math Club Scholarship

Amount: $100

Established by: This scholarship was established by the Math Club to recognize service. Preference is given to
Mathematics majors and Math Club officers are excluded.

Open to: This scholarship is open to all Math majors and minors who are continuing students.

Criteria: Math Club involvement • Essay • Future contributions to the Math Club.

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the application available from the Math Department (MH-154), Tutoring Center (MH-187D), or the Opportunity Center (MH-488); 2) Write a brief essay about your favorite Math Club event; and 3) Submit application materials to MH-154.

Outstanding Mathematic Scholar Award

Amount: $200

Established by: This award is by nomination only. It was established to recognize distinguished performance in mathematics of a graduating senior. Faculty nominate candidates who have demonstrated outstanding performance in at least one of the following: research, published problem solving (in publications such as Math Horizons, CMJ, Math Monthly), presentation of a poster at a professional math conference, participation in Putnam Exam or Math Modeling competition, or have shown extra initiative or depth in upper division math courses.

Open to: Nomination for this scholarship is open to all graduating math seniors.

Criteria: 3.0 GPA • Distinguished performance in mathematics

Santa Ana/Cal State Fullerton Mathematics Scholarship

Amount: Two $300 scholarships

Established by: This scholarship was initiated with a $4,000 donation from Dr. Pagni in 1995 to support students from Santa Ana High Schools who enroll at Cal State Fullerton as Mathematics majors. The amount has been augmented by donations from other educators and businesses. Each year, Dr. Pagni joins Mayor Miguel Pulido of Santa Ana in presenting this scholarship to two new recipients.

Open to: This scholarship is open to all Santa Ana Unified School District high school seniors who are planning to attend CSUF to pursue a math degree and teaching credential; Santa Ana high school graduates who are currently enrolled at CSUF as math majors and are planning on pursuing a teaching credential; or current Math majors who graduated from a Santa Ana Unified School District high school.

Criteria: Good academic standing

The Brandon Nghi Tran Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $1,500

Established by: This scholarship was established by the parents of Brandon Nghi Tran to recognize distinction in mathematics study and to provide financial assistance. Selection is made by the Scholarship Selection Committee in the Department of Mathematics.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing sophomore, junior, senior or graduate Mathematics majors.

Criteria: Financial need • Distinction in math courses

PHYSICS

Dan Black Physics/Business Scholarship

Amount: $10,000

Established by: This scholarship was established by Physics Alumnus, Dan Black, to assist students enrolled in the business emphasis of the physics major. When awarded to a freshman, $10,000 is paid over 4 years. If awarded to a sophomore, junior, or senior, the scholarship will be prorated.

Open to: This scholarship is open to Physics majors with a business emphasis who are pursuing an undergraduate degree.

Criteria: Academic achievement • Intended business career

Dan Black Scholarship

Amount: $400 per month (during academic year)

Established by: This scholarship is funded by Physics Alumnus, Dan Black, and awarded to students to assist them in meeting educational expenses. Must have completed all physics courses with a grade of C or higher and received credit for courses numbered 225, 225L, 226, 226L and 227, 227L.

Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate junior Physics majors.

Criteria: GPA • Financial need

Edward Lee Cooperman Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $250 (approx.)

Established by: This scholarship is named in memory of Dr. Edward Cooperman, who was a professor of physics and served as department chair and vice chair. He unselfishly and untiringly worked to help students. The scholarship is awarded to a Physics major with financial need.

Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing Physics majors who have completed four semesters of physics.

Criteria: Scholastic achievement • Financial need

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (or have one on file) for establishing financial need; and 3) Submit completed application to the Physics Department MH-611, (714) 278-3366.

Constance Beech Eiker and Raymond V. Adams Creativity Award

Amount: $300 (approx.)

Established by: This scholarship was established by Dr. Raymond Adams to recognize creativity in completion of a project aimed at developing an instructional laboratory experiment that might be suitable for use in an undergraduate physics course. The project must be coordinated with a faculty member. Students may work on a creativity project alone or as part of a team of no more than three students. Members of a team will share the cash award, if selected.

Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate physics students.

Criteria: Good academic standing • Execution of a creative project

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Describe the laboratory experiment; and 3) Submit the application to the Department of Physics, MH-611, (714) 278-3366.

Robert W. Kedzie Award

Amount: $250 (approx.)

Established by: This scholarship is by nomination only and is named in memory of Dr. Robert W. Kedzie, who was an enthusiastic volunteer tutor for the department. Two awards are made and given to a graduating Physics major and a junior who have shown the greatest improvement in course work applied to the major over the course of his or her academic career. All physics majors who are completing graduation requirements during the current academic year are considered for the senior award. All junior physics majors are considered for the junior award.

Open to: Nomination for this scholarship is open to continuing juniors and graduating senior Physics majors.

Criteria: Academic achievement

Norman Nitzberg Awards in Experimental Physics

Amount: Two awards: one for $200, one for a physics reference book

Established by: This scholarship was established by the family of the late Norman Nitzberg, machinist for the Physics Department and the College of Natural Science and Mathematics. The $200 cash award is made to a non-graduating Physics major showing the most promise in an area of experimental physics research. The book award is made to a graduating Physics student to recognize outstanding research in an area of experimental physics. This scholarship is by faculty nomination only.

Open to: This scholarship is open to non-graduating Physics majors. The book award is open to a graduating Physics student.

SCIENCE EDUCATION

Boeing Scholarship for Master of Arts in Teaching Science

Amount: $1,000

Established by: This scholarship was established by the Boeing Company to recognize academic achievement in science education.

Open to: This scholarship is open to graduate students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching Science degree program with at least one year remaining at CSUF.

Criteria: Scholastic Achievement

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare a letter indicating your interests, your academic background (including all university science courses and grades) and your future goals in science education; 3) Obtain at least one letter of recommendation addressed to the Scholarship Award Committee from a school administrator or an official of a community/professional science organization; and 4) Submit application materials to MH-527
