California State University, Fullerton offers a number of university-wide awards to students each year. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the appropriate office. If you are a student, you are encouraged to apply for a nomination through your school dean’s office. If you are a faculty member, we would welcome your nomination of deserving students for whichever award you feel would be appropriate. All materials are due in the specified office by the application or nomination deadline.

Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May.

 

Academic Senate Service Award

Amount: $2,000

Established by: This scholarship was established to honor qualified Cal State Fullerton students actively serving on University Governance Committees. Acceptable committee membership consists of 27 different committees as follows: Academic Appeals Board; Academic Senate; Academic Standards Committee; Affirmative Action Board; Alcohol and Other Drug Advisory Committee; Extended Education Committee; Faculty Development Center Board, Faculty Research Committee; Freshman Programs Advisory Board; General Education Committee; Graduate Education Committee; Honors Board, Information Technology Committee; International Education Committee; Institutional Review Board; Instructionally-Related Activities Committee; Library Committee; Outstanding Professor Committee; Parking Advisory Board; Planning, Resource Budget Committee; Risk Management Committee; Student Academic Life Committee; Student Fee Advisory Committee; Student Health Advisory Committee; University Advancement Committee; University Board on Writing Proficiency; University Curriculum Committee; and Women’s Studies Council. Each Spring, qualified students will be recognized at the Associated Students Recognition Banquet ceremony for their contributions to the University. Preference is given to applicants with extended service on a University Committee and to applicants who have not received this award in the past.

Open to: This scholarship is open to active volunteer student members serving on University Governance Committees.

Criteria: 2.75 GPA undergraduate students • 3.25 GPA graduate students • Full time enrollment (12 units) for undergraduates • Completed at least one semester on a University Committee

Application Procedure: 1) Provide a copy of your resume; 2) Provide two letters of recommendation, one from a CSUF faculty/staff who has knowledge of your contributions to the university and the other from the chair or a member of the committee on which you serve; 3) Write a one to two page statement that details your experience and knowledge acquired by serving on the committee. Include your personal/academic achievements, community service, and your future goals; 4) Provide a list of your memberships in on-campus organizations and include information about positions you have held, the length of time in office, and projects/events that you have coordinated; and 5) Submit completed application materials to MH-143, Academic Senate Office, c/o Chair, Student Academic Life Committee.

Giles T. Brown Outstanding Thesis Award

Amount: $1,000

Established by: This award is by faculty nomination only. It was established by Dr. Giles T. Brown, Associate Vice President of Academic Programs, Emeritus, and the Graduate Studies Office to honor a graduate student for their outstanding thesis. Any faculty may submit a nomination to their respective department chair that will send eligible entries to the college deans. College deans submit nominations to the Graduate Studies Office, with a copy of the thesis (unbound if possible). Entries must include the title page, signed by the student’s thesis committee. Finalists may be recommended for Honorable Mention by the thesis judges. Honorable Mention awardees will receive a certificate and a $100 cash award. For further information, contact the Graduate Studies Office, McCarthy Hall 103, (714) 278-2618. Presentation of the Outstanding Thesis Award is made at the University Honors Convocation.

Open to: Nomination for this award is open to graduate students who have completed a thesis and who have graduated in the previous year.

Excellence in Student Leadership Award

Amount: $500

Established by: The Excellence in Student Leadership Award was established by Robert Palmer and the Division of Student Affairs to provide recognition to a freshman or sophomore student who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to student leadership at California State University, Fullerton.

Open to: This award is open to CSUF students of freshman or sophomore standing.

Criteria: 2.5 GPA • Significant involvement in a student leadership position • Intent to be in a leadership position throughout college career

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the Excellence in Student Leadership Award application form which can be obtained in the Dean of Student’s Office, Titan Student Union 235, or the Vice President for Student Affairs Office, Langsdorf Hall 805; 2) Complete a one page essay, typed and double-spaced, describing student leadership positions held to date and intentions for future student leadership roles at CSUF (see application for content suggestions); 3) Provide resume; 4) Provide one letter of recommendation from CSUF staff or faculty; and 5) Submit completed application and materials to Titan Student Union 235, (714) 278-3211.

Kenneth L. Goodhue-McWilliams Award for Outstanding Community Service in the Health Professions

Amount: $1,000 and plaque

Established by: This award was established by the Health Professions Program and candidates are nominated by the Health Professions Committee. The recipient is announced at the University Honors Convocation and Student Health Professions Association (SHPA) banquet. The recipient’s name is also inscribed on the perpetual plaque displayed in the Health Professions Advising Office. For more information, contact the Health Professions Program Office, UH-223,

Criteria: Outstanding contributions to community • SHPA membership • Volunteer in a health profession setting

International Understanding Award

Amount: $300 and plaque

Established by: This award is funded by the Emil Grieshaber Memorial Fund to recognize personal contributions to increase international understanding through leadership activities on campus with clubs and university-sponsored programs. The selection process may include an interview with selection committee. The recipient is recognized at the University Honors Convocation.

Open to: This award is open to graduating students who are eligible to participate in Commencement.

Criteria: Academic performance • Contributions to increase international understanding

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Prepare an essay addressing qualifications for the award; 3) Obtain a minimum of two recommendations from faculty or staff; and 4) Submit application materials to International Education and Exchange, UH-244, (714) 278-2787.

Application Deadline: March 15

 

Miles D. McCarthy Health Professions Outstanding Graduating Student Award

Amount: $1,000 and plaque

Established by: This award was established by the Health Professions Program to recognize and honor students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. Candidates are nominated by the Health Professions Committee. The annual award is announced at the University Honors Convocation and Student Health Professions Association (SHPA) banquet. The recipient’s name is also inscribed on the perpetual plaque displayed in the Health Professions Advising Office.

Open to: Nomination for this award is open to degree candidates and post-baccalaureate students entering health professions.

Criteria: Scholastic achievement • School or community service • Acceptance into a health profession school

Application Procedure: By nomination only

President’s Associates Graduating Senior Scholastic Award

Amount: $1,000 and an engraved plaque

Established by: This award was established by the President’s Associates to recognize outstanding academic performance. The student is recognized at the University Honors Convocation and at the student’s particular commencement ceremony.

Open to: This award is open to students who will receive their baccalaureate degrees in January, June or August.

Criteria: Top scholastic achievement • Leadership activities • Community service • Participation in a program funded by Associated Students, Inc. • Faculty recommendation letter

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the President’s Associates application, available in the President’s Office, LH-900, Executive Vice President’s Office, LH-810, Dean of Students’ Office, TSU-239, the offices of each College’s Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, or University Advancement, CP-850, (714) 278-7324; 2) Obtain 2 letters of recommendation; at least one of the letters must be from a faculty member; and 3) Submit application materials to Robyn Martinelli in College Park 850.

Application Deadline: March 1

President’s Associates Outstanding Graduate Student Award

Established by: This award was established by the President’s Associates to recognize commitment to Cal State Fullerton through leadership and service. The student is recognized at the University Honors Convocation and at the student’s particular commencement ceremony.

Open to: This award is open to students who will receive their Master’s degree in January, June or August.

Criteria: Top scholastic achievement • Participation in a program funded by Associated Students, Inc. • Faculty recommendation letter

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the President’s Associates application, available in the President’s Office, LH-900, Executive Vice President’s Office, LH-810, Dean of Students’ Office, TSU-239, the offices of each College’s Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, or University Advancement, CP-850, (714) 278-7324; 2) Obtain 2 letters of recommendation; at least one of the letters must be from a faculty member; and 3) Submit application materials to Robyn Martinelli in College Park 850.
