University Scholarships

These scholarships are not restricted to any major or field of study. A student in any major may apply. In some cases there are other restrictions or preferences such as trade union membership or geographic location of resident.
Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May.
William H. Alamshah Memorial Prize
Amount: 2 awards: $400 first prize and $200 second prize
Established by: This award was named for the late William H. Alamshah, professor of Philosophy, founding member and first chair of the Philosophy Department, and recognizes the best creative philosophy essay. The essay will be judged according to the thoughtfulness of the approach and the skillfulness with which it is executed.
Open to: This award is open to currently enrolled CSUF students.
Criteria: Philosophy essay

Alumni Association Scholarship
Amount: $3,000
Established by: This award was established by the Alumni Association. Money must be used for the upcoming academic year and funds may not be transferred to another school. Recipients may not receive more than $5,000 in total scholarship money per year. Undergraduate recipients must carry at least 12 units; graduate recipients must carry at least 9 units each semester. Up to two scholarships will be awarded in May.
Open to: This award is open to all continuing full-time CSUF undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students may be first year students if they are CSUF alumni. Undergraduates must have completed a minimum of 24 units during the current academic year at Cal State Fullerton.
Criteria: 3.0 GPA • Merit • Volunteer involvement with outside service organizations
Application Procedure: 1) Complete the CSUF Alumni Association Scholarship application form, available after December 9 in PDF form from the Alumni Association website at www.csufalumni.com or in the Alumni Association Office, located in the George G. Army ROTC Scholarships
Amount: Full tuition, plus $900 for books and up to $500 per month for cost of living expenses
Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Military Science/Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Program. Two, three and four-year scholarships are offered. The number of scholarships awarded annually is dependent upon the number of applicants. The cost of living expense is prorated based on class level ($300, freshmen; $350, sophomores; $450, juniors; $500, seniors). If you would like more information, contact (714) 278-5545.
Open to: This scholarship is open to full-time graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the ROTC program.

Asian Business Association Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Asian Business Association of Orange County (ABAOC) to assist students in meeting educational expenses. Up to four scholarships at $1,000 each or eight scholarships of $500 each may be awarded. From the applications received, selected applicants will be invited for a personal interview to be held in July and August. At the interview, the topic of the essay will be provided with a September 30th deadline date. Selection will occur in October and the scholarship(s) will be awarded at the Inaugural Ball of ABAOC held in October.
Open to: This scholarship is open to new students directly from high school or continuing first or second year students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree and are Orange County residents.

Application Procedure: 1) Write a resume; 2) Obtain two letters of recommendation from individuals who are
knowledgeable about your community involvement. They can be written by a professor, mentor, coach or director. Have each letter placed in a sealed envelope; 3) Provide a sealed, official copy of your academic transcript; 4) Submit application materials to ABAOC, Priscilla Sabado, 28 Brisbane Way, Irvine, CA 92612; and 5) If requested, attend a personal interview and write an essay on a topic provided at the interview.

Asian Faculty and Staff Book Scholarship
Amount: Up to three $250 scholarships will be awarded
Established by: This award was established by the Asian Faculty and Staff Association to recognize academic achievement, active involvement in the local and/or campus Asian American and Pacific Islander community and demonstrated financial need.
Open to: This award is open to CSUF full-time undergraduate and graduate students except previous AFSA scholarship recipients.

Robin Anne Syperda Benedict Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $750 (Approx.)
Established by: This award is funded by William J. Landon in the memory of a dear friend and graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Robin Anne Syperda Benedict, to support the efforts of students who are in need of financial assistance. Robin Anne, a very active young woman, who enjoyed sports and classical music, was a human service major who graduated in 1984.
Open to: This award is open to continuing full-time students.

The “Big Save” Scholarship
Amount: $4,000
Established by: This award was established by Sharon Arkin and Rodger Talbott in memory of George Howard Talbott. Sharon and Rodger share a deep passion for higher education and believe that it is a vital part of a person’s development. The couple has a long history with Cal State Fullerton through their involvement with “A Bid of Excitement Auction” and University Advancement staff. Sharon and Rodger wanted to establish a scholarship not purely based on academic excellence but rather on hard work and a true need for financial support. Applicants should not be discouraged to apply due to a lower GPA. They hope to help someone who would not be able to attend college without this support. This is why they call it the “Big Save” scholarship.

Giles T. Brown Scholarship
Amount: $200 (Approx.)
Established by: This award is funded by the Evening Forum of Leisure World in the name of Dr. Giles Brown, Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of History, Emeritus. The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more students who have completed their junior year and plan to graduate from Cal State Fullerton.
Open to: This award is open to continuing full-time students entering their senior year.

Dan Byrnes Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This award was created by his family and friends to honor the memory of Dan Byrnes, former chief of public safety at Cal State Fullerton. Preference for the scholarship is given to criminal justice, political science or public administration majors.
Open to: This award is open to any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students who plan a career as a sworn officer in law enforcement and who will be enrolled full-time at CSUF for the next academic year. Past recipients are ineligible to apply.

Chicano/Latino Faculty and Staff Association (CLFSA) Scholarship
Amount: Varies ($500 for undergraduates; $600 for graduate students)
Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by the Cal State Fullerton CLFS Association to assist students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. In addition, this scholarship recognizes leadership and service within the University and community.
Open to: This scholarship is open to all majors; full-time undergraduate and graduate students who will be enrolled full-time at CSUF for the next academic year.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA for undergraduates • 3.2 GPA for graduate students • Leadership • Active involvement in community and/or campus organizations • Financial need

Council of Building and Construction Trades Scholarship
Amount: $300 (Approx.)
Established by: This award is funded by the Building and Construction Trades Council of Orange County, AFL-CIO. First preference is given to students who are members or whose immediate family are members, active or retired, of a labor union affiliated with the donor.
Open to: This award is open to continuing full-time students with or without union affiliation.

DeSales Kohl and John Leo Coval Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was established by DeSales Kohl and John Leo Coval to honor and recognize adult reentry students who are single parents holding academic and professional promise. They must also be making satisfactory progress toward a Baccalaureate Degree.
Open to: This award is open to an adult reentry student, pursuing a baccalaureate degree, currently enrolled in at least 6 units, and who will be continuously enrolled in at least 6 units in the Fall semester. Candidate will also be head of household and a primary caregiver to one or more dependent children.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA • Half-time enrollment • Financial need • Academic and professional promise

CSU California Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Award
Amount: $3,000
Established by: This award is funded by the State of California for all CSU campuses to assist graduate students who plan to pursue doctoral study, especially students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. The award is given specifically to assist students with travel, including conference fees, testing fees, application fees, and research materials related to pursuing a doctoral degree. The award is not given for living expenses, fees or textbooks.
Open to: This award is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate CSUF students.

Emeriti Memorial Scholarship

Established by: This award is funded by the Emeriti of California State University, Fullerton.
Open to: This award is open to continuing CSUF full-time, upper division or graduate students in any major.

Future Scholars Program
Amount: Up to $1,000
Established by: This award was established by the CSU Scholarship Program for the Future in an effort to increase college participation of disadvantaged students.
Open to: This award is open to first-time freshmen/first-time transfer students who meet regular CSUF admission requirements as a new CSU freshman or transfer student.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA • Significant contributions to school and community • Financial need

Established by: The Graduate Equity Fellowship (GEF) is funded by the State of California for all CSU campuses to assist students in meeting their educational expenses.
Open to: This award is open to all full-time CSUF graduate students enrolled the previous Fall semester who are California residents.

Dorothy M. Hagan and Juanita W. Hicks Achievement Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was established by the family of Dorothy M. Hagan and Juanita W. Hicks to provide financial assistance, based on merit and financial need, to continuing CSUF undergraduate students.
Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing CSUF undergraduate students in any course of study.

Application Procedure: 1) Complete the scholarship application, available in McCarthy Hall 133; 2) Submit two letters of recommendation; one of the letters must be from a CSUF faculty member; for incoming freshman applicants, this letter should be from a high school teacher or counselor. Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of William Hernandez to recognize outstanding academic excellence.

Emma E. Holmes Outstanding Mathematics Project Award

Established by: This award is by nomination only and was established by the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education. The department selects the recipient on the recommendation of the graduate student's project advisor .
Open to: Nomination for this award is open to candidates for the MS in Education with a concentration in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction.
Criteria: Outstanding project or thesis related to mathematics education in elementary or middle school

Irvine Campus Shea Homes Scholarship
Amount: $250 (approx.)
Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Shea Homes and will be awarded annually to two students to assist them in the continuation of their studies at the Irvine campus.
Open to: This scholarship is open to all continuing students enrolled in courses at the Irvine campus.

LINC TELACU Scholarship Program
Amount: Up to $1,000
Established by: This scholarship is funded by LINC (Latino Initiatives for the Next Century) TELACU Scholarship Program, the Office of the President, Student Academic Services, and the Office of the Vice President and is awarded annually to low income, first generation college students who will be enrolled full-time.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who reside in or have resided in Los Angeles, Montebello, Commerce, Bell Gardens, Monterey Park, South Gate, Huntington Park, Pico Rivera, Santa Ana, East Los Angeles, Pomona and the Inland Empire; applicant may be either incoming first-time freshman or a continuing student.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA • School or community activities

Jorice Maag Local History Scholarship
Amount: $800
Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum to encourage the study of the history of California, with preference given to those interested in local history. History is defined as the study of “topics, persons or institutions” relating to the immediate area of the campus, Orange County or surrounding areas.
Open to: This scholarship is open to full-time continuing upper division or graduate students pursuing topics related to California history and will not be awarded more than twice to the same individual.

Beverly and Arnold Miller University Scholarship in Gerontology
Amount: $1,000 to $1,500 (up to 8 awards)
Established by: This scholarship is an endowed program established by Beverly and Arnold Miller to provide support to students who are pursuing careers in Gerontology. Awards are given annually with the opportunity to be renewed with demonstrated recipient accomplishments. Finalists may be asked to participate in an interview.
Open to: This scholarship is open to junior/senior students with a minor or concentration in Gerontology or to graduate students who have been accepted into the M.S. Gerontology Degree program.
Criteria: High Academic Achievement • Professional Promise • Demonstrated interest in a career in adult health/wellness or Gerontology

Melinda Guzman Moore Leadership Scholarship
Amount: $500
Established by: This scholarship is funded by Melinda Guzman Moore, who currently serves as a Board of Trustee member for the California State University system. The scholarship is awarded to recognize outstanding leadership and service to disadvantaged individuals or communities. The scholarship will assist students in meeting educational expenses so that they can continue to pursue leadership opportunities at Cal State Fullerton and in the greater community. In addition to the cash award the recipient will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

individuals and communities, future commitment toward services, and how this scholarship will supplement your educational funding; 3) Obtain a letter of reference from an individual who is knowledgeable about your contributions and leadership involvement. Have the letter placed in a sealed envelope; and 4) Submit application materials to the Dean of Student’s Office, TSU-235.

Nonprofit Professionals Alumni Association Award
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This award was established by the Nonprofit Professionals Alumni Association (NPAA). The association was formed in 1999 by CSUF alumni working in the nonprofit sector. Through its programs and services, NPAA seeks to attract and develop outstanding leaders who will advance the mission of nonprofit agencies in our community. Students and alumni are invited to join NPAA for networking, professional development, social activities and community service. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing or graduating CSUF students who intend to seek a career in the nonprofit sector and who have completed one of the following: 1) Work experience or an internship in the nonprofit sector, 2) Public service and Nonprofit Organization Leadership Certificate (Student Leadership Institute, TSU-235), or 3) CSUF Service Learning coursework (Center for Internship and Service Learning, UH-209). Courses approved for Service Learning Credit are coded in class schedule by a black dot with letter “S.”

Priscilla Oaks Emerging Leader’s Award
Amount: $200
Established by: This scholarship was named for Priscilla Oaks in her memory, to encourage and support emerging student leaders. These emerging leaders have been involved at Cal State Fullerton and/or in the greater community and have emphasized their support of global understanding and/or support of a multicultural environment. Dr. Oaks was a professor of English at Cal State Fullerton who was killed in a tragic auto accident in mid-1980. Dr. Oaks dedicated her life to supporting Cal State Fullerton’s very early efforts to build students’ multicultural and global leadership skills. In addition to the $200 award, the recipient will receive recognition at the University Leadership Conference.

Financial need is not necessarily a consideration.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time CSUF undergraduate or graduate students in any major in the second year or later. Applicants must have at least one year of study remaining.

Phi Beta Delta Student Scholarship Internationalist Awards

Established by: This award was established by Phi Beta Delta to recognize scholastic achievement and outstanding leadership in the area of international studies, intercultural studies or campus international activities.

President’s Scholars Program
Amount: In-state CSU enrollment fees for four years; $750 annually for books and supplies; use of a laptop computer; complimentary parking; priority registration; automatic admittance to the University Honors Program; priority
consideration for on-campus housing.
Established by: This scholarship is funded by the President’s Associates. The Front & Center fundraising event provides all Presidents’ Scholars with $750 annually for books and supplies. Dell Computers and Titan Shops provide each scholar the use of a laptop computer. Each year, at least 10 students from the current year of California high-school graduates are selected. National Merit Scholars, finalists or semi-finalists are offered an automatic interview. President’s Scholars are selected by a committee of faculty administrators, students and community representatives. President’s Scholars attend special seminars and selected social, cultural and athletic events, receive letters of recommendation from the President, and are honored in other special ways.
Open to: This scholarship is open to first-time freshmen who are legal residents of California.

Study Abroad, Ambassadors of International Education Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Office of International Education & Exchange. A condition or requirement, if selected as a recipient, is to agree to assist the CSUF Study Abroad Office in promoting study abroad programs following your return. The Scholarship Selection Committee will award the scholarship during the Fall & Spring semester for use in the following semester. Letters of reference from non-CSUF faculty will not be accepted.
Open to: This scholarship is open to CSUF full-time undergraduate and graduate degree seeking students who have been accepted to a study abroad program

The Thurmond Scholarship
Amount: $1,000 and $2,000
Established by: This scholarship was established by the donor, through the YWCA, to recognize students and to assist with educational expenses. Six units of enrollment are required for the $1,000 scholarship, while full-time enrollment or 12 units is required for the $2,000 scholarship.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree who will be
continuously enrolled in at least 6 units.

David L. Walkington Memorial Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship is funded by the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum and was established to honor the memory of Dr. David L. Walkington, late director of the Fullerton Arboretum. This scholarship may not be awarded more than twice to the same individual.
Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing full-time upper division or graduate students majoring in Biological Science or related fields which emphasize botany, ethno-botany, medicinal plant usage, ornamental horticulture, plant adaptation, the genetic engineering of plants, biogeography and environmental studies.
