Jason Darr ′05
graduated with a bachelor of science degree in human services with a concentration in mental health. While at Cal State Fullerton he was active in various student leadership roles. In the community, Jason has been active in California Youth Connection helping pass legislation for current foster youth. As a peer mentor at the Orangewood Children's Foundation, Jason has facilitated workshops for the Independent Living Program for the past two years. Jason is currently a state board member for Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). He has spoken at symposiums on permanency and recently presented at the National CASA Conference in Atlanta. Currently Jason is pursuing a masters degree in counseling at Cal State Fullerton as the Dr. Robert Palmer Fellowship recipient expected to graduate in 2009.

Nicole Demedenko ′05
graduated this May with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Nicole came to the Guardian Scholars Program as a transfer student from Orange Coast College. Last year, her peers elected Nicole to represent them on the Guardian Scholars Student Advisory Committee. Nicole was instrumental in student recruitment for the Digital Storytelling Training in Berkeley. She has also taken an active interest in advocating for foster youth statewide through California Youth Connection and is a coordinator with the Y.O.U.T.H. training project in Oakland. Nicole is also pursuing a graduate degree at San Francisco State where she will obtain her master's degree in social work.
Megan Gornall ′05
graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications with an emphasis in advertising. Megan has made significant contributions through her four year membership in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority where she held the position as philanthropy chair. In addition, she served on the board of directors for the American Marketing Association. Currently Megan has achieved her dream of breaking into the world of advertising by becoming a media planner for a premier advertising agency in Orange County. She would like to tell everyone that has helped her accomplish her dream, "to the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world."

Graduate ′05
This Guardian Scholars graduate graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications this summer. After transferring from Fullerton College, she made the dean's list her first year with the Guardian Scholars Program. Throughout her college career, she spent many years as an advocate for foster youth as well as being a nationally recognized public speaker on the behalf of foster care issues. She hopes to find a job she can enjoy.

Gladys Gonzalez ′05
graduated with dual bachelors' degrees: communication with an emphasis in television journalism and humanities and social sciences with an emphasis in Spanish. Graduating will be her biggest achievement. Throughout her years of study, she feels that she has made significant improvement both educationally and personally. Gladys sees herself working at a Spanish news broadcast station reporting for their entertainment section and difficult news stories. Gladys plans to obtain a master's degree in communications.

Markus Jerome Burks ′05
graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in entertainment art and animation. During his six year stay at Cal State Fullerton, he has become known as "Comic Relief" in the animation department and to half the campus. He has participated in numerous clubs on campus such as the Pencil Mileage Club, the Kung Fu Club and Club Souled Out where he mainly took up space and befriended anything within three feet of his reach. He will pursue a career in the fields of cartoon animation and the video game industry.

Krystle Bybee ′05
graduated with honors and earned her bachelor's degree in human services with a minor in psychology. While at Cal State Fullerton Krystle was a member of the National Residence Halls Honorary (NRHH) and the Human Services Student Association, a Resident Advisor, and a Student Representative for the Guardian Scholars Advisory Board. Krystle plans to pursue a graduate degree and hopes to one day establish a career in Student Affairs or Administration at a university. She is currently working in higher education at Mt San Antonio College.

Amy Talbutt ′05
graduated with her bachelor's degree in human services. She came into the CSUF system as a freshman with sophomore transfer credits and after three years attending Fullerton, she is looking forward to pursuing a career in social services or education. Amy is also considering pursuing a master's degree in counseling. She is currently working at Orangewood Children’s Foundation.

Peter Gorton ′05
graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in music with a concentration in both music history and literature and the music of film. He came to the Guardian Scholars as a transfer student from Modesto. Peter had the opportunity to study abroad for a year at a music conservatory in Southern Germany. He plans to pursue a career in film production, fusing his musical skills with his love of film and work as a music editor, orchestra or music contractor. Peter plans to go on to pursue a master's degree and possibly even a Ph.D.

Michael de la Torre ′05
graduated with a degree in communications with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in human communications. He is extremely motivated and has a passion for entrepreneurial enterprises focusing on investing in real estate. While in college Michael was actively involved in his fraternity and has participated in numerous community service projects. Michael plans to start a successful career in real estate. He is currently working in property acquisition and land management.

Tonya Hightower ′05
graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in management and transferred from Santa Ana College. She is currently a peer mentor at Orangewood Children's Foundation where she serves as a mentor and role model for children currently in the foster care system. Tonya continues to give back in many different ways. She is also an active member of California Youth Connection, which has provided her with numerous opportunities to travel and speak on behalf of foster youth nationwide. Tonya hopes to utilize her business degree to work in the field of international patent law.
