DSS Housing Accomodations

Disability Support Services (DSS) works in collaboration with Housing and Residential Engagement (HRE) to coordinate appropriate accommodations for students with documented disabilities or health conditions. DSS Housing accommodations are considered on a case-by-case basis and are determined by the nature of the student’s disability and the functional impact it has within the campus living environment.

Approval of housing accommodations does not guarantee housing placement and is contingent upon a student’s standing within Housing and Residential Engagement. DSS does not have the authority to prioritize students on housing waitlists.

Housing accommodations are based on medical evidence of need and are determined on a case-by-case basis. Documentation should provide information about the specific functional limitations caused by the disability.

ADA-accessible units are reserved for students with approved medical accommodations. Some units may be held for mid-year, spring, or temporary accommodation needs. We make every effort to provide accessible housing and consider each student’s needs individually. If accessible units are initially full, Housing works with Disability Support Services to provide reasonable modifications or alternative options. Assignments are based on documented need, not strictly on a first-come, first-served basis.

Questions? We’re Here to Help

Email housing@fullerton.edu with any questions.

Helpful tip: Start early! Completing both the Housing and DSS steps as soon as possible helps ensure the best placement options.

Please note: DSS approval confirms the type of housing support a student needs, but it:

- Applies only to students who have secured a housing assignment
- Does not create priority for placement
- Does not ensure a specific room, building, or roommate request

Housing assignments are based on availability and the approved accommodation needs. If approved, the student will be placed in a space that meets their accommodation requirements.

Tips for a Faster, Smoother Process

  • Communicate early with roommates about your ESA request and expected move-in.
  • Have all ESA documentation ready before starting the Housing submission.
  • Check deadlines to avoid delays if requesting mid-semester or spring move-in.
  • If you have not heard from Housing in 15 business days, follow up with housing@fullerton.edu

Timeline

  • ESA approval typically takes 5–15 business days, depending on how quickly students and roommates complete each step.
  • Lack of Student response, documentation delays, and roommate approvals can delay this timeline

Important Notes

  • DSS approval does not guarantee housing placement, a specific room, or roommate.
  • Assignments are based on availability and suitability for your approved accommodation.
  • Students may not bring their ESA to campus until all approvals are complete. Any unapproved animals found in housing must be removed immediately and may result in conduct sanctions.
  • The updated ADA law does not cover emotional support animals (ESAs); the ADA only covers  service animals , which are specifically trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability.

Accessible Space Accommodation

Accessible rooms are limited, and the aim is to provide a smooth living experience for students who require mobility accessibility. Most of these spaces are located on the first floor (for safety reason, in the case that elevator cannot be used to evacuate during emergency).

These spaces may include the following features:

  • Moving assistance (must secure a housing assignment before move-in and communicate with the Housing Office ahead of time if this is needed)

Dining Hall Dietary Accommodations

Typically, only in situations where Titan Dining cannot reasonably accommodate a student’s documented disability-related needs will a release from the meal plan requirement be considered reasonable accommodation.

Before requesting a dining accommodation, students should begin with a conversation with Titan Eats and the Executive Chef to discuss their dietary needs. Additional information about Titan Eats can be found on the TITANEats website.

If Titan Eats is unable to accommodate a student’s disability-related needs, they will advise the student to begin the DSS Accommodation process. Titan Eats and DSS will consult regarding your dining accommodation requests and inform the Housing Office if a Meal Plan Exemption is approved. Housing Office will direct student complete the Meal Plan Exemption Form only if approved by both Titan Eats and DSS.

Existing support from Titan Dining includes:

Pure Eats: The Titan Dining Hall offers an allergen-friendly station (Pure Eats), with menu items that are made without the top 9 major allergens or gluten.
