Philosophy and Purpose of RA Selection

 

The goal of the RA selection process is to identify qualified students for the available positions. The Housing & Residence Life staff encourages you to educate yourself about the RA position through reading the website, attending the Information Sessions, talking to a current RA and a Complex Coordinator. If you have questions regarding any portion of the process, please ask us. We want you to be as prepared as possible for the journey you are about to embark upon. Best wishes on your candidacy.

Why become an RA?

A Resident Advisor is para-professional staff member at CSUF who resides in the residence halls and is responsible for the residents on his/her floor or area. The position has a high degree of responsibility and trust associated with it. On college campuses across the nation, it's one of the most well-known and sought after student leadership experiences.RAs typically live and work on a floor of approximately 50 residents providing academic, personal, and social support for students within the community. RAs are considered leaders within the community and are role models on campus. The position is a demanding time commitment but provides excellent opportunities for personal growth in areas of leadership, communication, and time management. The RA works to provide a safe environment conducive to supporting the educational mission of the University. By making responsible decisions while serving as a campus role model, the RA educates residents in areas of personal responsibility, cultural inclusion, and conflict management.

 

Through this position, you will learn and develop:

• interpersonal skills through interacting with students and professional staff
• insight into your own strengths and weaknesses as you grow
• appropriate crisis response as you deal with incidents in the housing area
• positive role-modeling behavior as students look to you for leadership
• greater self-confidence as you offer assistance to students
• event planning skills as you plan program for students to attend
• a sense of accomplishment as you help students make the most of their experience
• valuable practical work experience to make yourself more marketable in a job search
