What are the benefits of certification to institutions?
The benefits of the athletic certification to institutions are self-awareness, affirmation, and opportunities to improve.

What are the three areas certification addresses?
The Operating Principles/Standards addresses the areas of governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; commitment to equity and student-athlete welfare.

How does Cal State Fullerton benefit from athletics certification?
Cal State Fullerton will benefit by increasing campus-wide awareness and knowledge of the athletics program, confirming its strengths and developing plans to improve areas of concern.

What is Cal State Fullerton's certification status?
California State Fullerton is currently conducting its second cycle-NCAA Certification Self-Study. The process began in the fall of 2005 with the institution launching a review of Intercollegiate Athletics. Cal State Fullerton completed its first cycle certification self-study in 1998 and was certified, and the Interim Report in 2002.

What is the Certification Steering Committee and what is its role?
The Certification Steering Committee is chaired by Cal State Fullerton Executive Vice President, Judith Anderson.  Members of the committee include university faculty and staff, athletics department personnel and community volunteers.

How was the Certification Steering Committee selected?
The Certification Steering Committee was selected with broad-based participation in mind.  All divisions of the University are represented on the committee.  They include one community member/alumnus and Big West Conference involvement.

What is the Chairs Committee and what is its role?
The Chairs Committee is composed of Steering Committee chair; three subcommittee chairs; two assistant chairs of the Steering Committee; the Director of Athletics; the Senior Associate Director of Athletics/SWA; and Chief Report Writer.  This committee developed the subcommittee rosters ensuring broad-based participation as well as gender and ethnic diversity.

What are the three subcommittees and what are their roles?
The three subcommittees are Academic Integrity; Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance; and Equity and Student-Athlete Welfare. Each subcommittee is chaired by a member of the Steering committee.  It is the subcommittees’ responsibility for collecting information and writing the draft report for assigned area.

What is Cal State Fullerton process and progress?
A videoconference with an NCAA staff liaison was held on October 13, 2005. This videoconference provided an overview of the certification process and addressed requirements for and questions related to completion of the self study.

The committees have met regularly since September 2005 to collect data, discuss findings and review progress. The data gathering and report writing was completed by March 1, 2006.

A thorough review of the self-study report was conducted in March and April by the Steering Committee to ensure that the responses and plans for improvement reflected the operating principles. The final report was submitted to the NCAA national office on May 11, 2006.

How will information on the certification process and findings be disseminated to internal and external audiences?
Presentations were made in March 2006 to various campus groups about the certification process, its origins and importance, some of the findings and plans for improvement.

A forum was scheduled on April 2006 to provide information to faculty, staff, students and community groups.

The Steering Committee reviewed all feedback received from the meetings and via this website, and made changes to the self-study report and plans for improvement as necessary before the entire document was finalized.

What is the certification timeline?
Submission date of the self-study report is by May 15, 2006. The NCAA staff liaison will then review the report for preliminary issues.  A peer review team will visit our campus on September 25-27, 2006. The Committee on Athletics Certification makes the final certification decision.  A decision will be sent to Cal State Fullerton’s President, Milton A. Gordon in February 2007.

What is the role of the Peer Review Team?
The responsibilities of the Peer Review Team are to verify Accuracy of the self-study; verify Broad-based participation; and evaluate Conformity with the operating principles
