Placement Tests

Entry Level English and Math Placement Tests

All students are required to take the English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry Level Math (ELM) tests before the May, 3, 2014 deadline, unless you qualify for an exemption. This deadline is in place to ensure that you have your placement scores back in time to register for the correct courses at New Student Orientation. Depending on your major, you may also need to take the additional math and chemistry placement tests.

Math Qualifying Exam (MQE)

All students planning to enroll in Math 130 (Short Course in Calculus), Math135, (Business Calculus), or Math 150A (Analytic Geometry and Calculus) must take the Mathematics Qualifying Exam (MQE) or have a Mathematics Department approved exemption. Students must pass the MQE or be exempt before registering for any of the above courses.

MQE Description

Test scores are valid for two consecutive semesters. The MQE consists of 40 multiple choice questions covering college algebra and trigonometry. For Math 130, a score of 18 or better is required; for Math 135, a score of 22 or better is required; for Math 150A, a score of 25 or better is required.

You will have one hour to complete the Math Qualifying Exam (MQE). Calculators are NOT allowed while taking the exam.

MQE Exemptions

To be exempt from the MQE, students must have:

  • For Math 130 & 135: A “C” or better in Math 115 or 125 at CSUF or equivalent course
  • For Math 150A: A “C” or better in Math 125 or equivalent course
  • Any score on the AP calculus exam
  • One semester of high school calculus with a C or better

All exemptions must be verified with high school or college transcript in the Math Department before enrolling in Math 130, 135, or 150A. If you are exempt from the MQE, please bring verification with you to your New Student Orientation session (transcripts and/or test scores).

Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE)

All students planning to enroll in Chemistry 120A General Chemistry are required to take the Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE) or have completed Chemistry 115: Introduction to General Chemistry or its equivalent, verified with an official transcript, with a grade of C or higher. In addition, all students who enroll in Chemistry 120A must be exempt from, or have passed the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM). You must meet all of these prerequisites to be eligible to enroll in CHEM 120A.

CPE Description

The CPE may be taken only once a year. Test scores are valid for two consecutive semesters. You will have 45 minutes to complete the Chemistry Placement Exam (CPE). The CPE consists of 44 multiple-choice questions addressing basic concepts in arithmetic, algebra and high school chemistry. In scoring the test, only correct answers will be counted. A Periodic Table of elements and a table of abbreviations and symbols are provided in the test book. You may need them for some questions. All other data are given in the questions. Calculators are permitted but not essential.

BRING number 2 pencils with erasers and a nonprogrammable calculator to the test session. Test results will be posted outside the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, located in McCarthy Hall - room 580, approximately one week after the test. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will not give scores over the telephone.

CPE Exemptions

CHEM 115 Equivalent
To be exempt from the CPE, students must have completed Chemistry 115: Introduction to General Chemistry or its equivalent with a grade of C or higher. If you have taken an equivalent chemistry course at another college, you must submit a copy of your transcript that displays the course grade earned and a course description from the college catalog to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in MH 580 prior to enrolling in Chemistry 120A: General Chemistry.

AP Chemistry Exemption
Students who pass the AP Chemistry exam with a score of 3 or greater are eligible to enroll in CHEM 120A. Students who earn a score of 4 or greater on the AP Chemistry exam will be considered for enrollment in CHEM 120B. Any student who wants to establish their eligibility for CHEM 120A or 120B and has taken the AP exam, should bring evidence of AP Chemistry exam scores to the Chemistry Department in MH 580.
