Health Education and Promotion
College can be amazing but it can also be overwhelming. If you are simultaneously trying to manage studying, relationships, staying healthy and living on your own, it's normal to feel stressed and exhausted. But being thrown off balance from college overload presents as much of an opportunity as it does a reason for panic; college is a dress rehearsal for life itself, and the CSUF Health Education and Promotion department is dedicated to helping students regain their balance here and now.

There’s always something you can do to get back in sync. Check out the links below for helpful tools and tricks you can use to refocus and find your balance.
BREATHE. Deep breathing can help your mind focus and calm your nerves.
EAT. Eating right will make you sharper, smarter and more energetic.
SLEEP. Getting a full night’s sleep before an exam will help you perform better than if you cram everything the night before.
MOVE. Regular exercise – and this can mean everything from playing a sport, working out or going for a walk – can help make you happier, healthier and smarter.
PLAY. Did you know that fun is fundamental for a life worth living?
PAUSE. Give yourself a break; multi-tasking is not as productive as it seems. Learning and retention can be more effective if you break up study time – so get up from your desk or computer to breathe, stretch, and get back in balance.
LAUGH. Did you know laughter delivers real health benefits? A good laugh can improve brain function and helps with relaxation.
TALK. Communication and vulnerability ensure that you feel connected to others, and maintaining a sense of connectedness is essential to enduring life’s hardships.
RELAX. Did you know that letting go of stress can be as simple as taking a 10-minute vacation in your head? With practice, you can switch the pressure off and give yourself, your body and your spirit a break.
Are You Taking On Too Much?
Life’s responsibilities can become complex, and it’s important to identify when “overwhelmed” has turned into a crisis and you need extra help.
Major Out-Of-Balance RED FLAGS
- Feeling so overwhelmed, inadequate, panicked or frustrated that you feel powerless to do anything at all.
- Being late for everything from turning your work in when it’s due to getting to class on time.
- Relying on coffee and sodas to give you energy.
- Gaining or losing significant amounts of weight during one semester.
- Having a ratio of 3 hours or more of partying (including recovering) for every 1 hour of studying.
- Giving in to pressure (from friends, family, or others) to do things that don’t feel right.
Creating a balanced life is a work in progress. You may be able to get back in balance on your own or you may want to enlist the insights of an expert.
