TRIO SSS welcomes all interested CSUF students to apply to the program. As a federally funded TRIO program, TRIO SSS serves first generation, low-income and disabled students. All completed TRIO SSS applications are reviewed and considered for acceptance until program capacity of 160 participants is reached. A waiting list of eligible applicants is maintained by the program. As current TRIO SSS participants graduate each semester vacancies are filled with students from the waiting list.

Eligibility requirements

A student is eligible to participate in TRIO SSS if a student meets all of the following criteria:

  • Is a citizen or national of the United States or meets the residency requirements to receive Federal Financial Aid
  • Is enrolled at CSUF or accepted for enrollment next semester at CSUF
  • Has a need for academic support –as determined by TRIO SSS
  • A low-income student (using federal income guidelines according to family size and taxable income)
  • A First Generation college student (neither parent or guardian has a four year college degree) OR student with a physical or learning disability (disability will need to be verified through the CSUF Disability Support Services

Financial Verification

According to federal policy (Higher Education Act (e)(1)), TRIO SSS must provide documentation of a student’s eligibility for the program to the U.S. Department of Education and implement the grant regulations that state two-thirds of the students served must meet federal first-generation and low-income guidelines.

MOST COMMON FORMS OF INCOME VERIFICATION INCLUDE:

  • A signed copy of your parent(s)' most recent tax forms (first 2 pages that include taxable income and signature)
  • A copy of your parent(s)' IRS transcript (available by request through the IRS website or IRS office).
  • If you have no income or do not file taxes this form can be used to verify low-income eligibility.

WHY DO I NEED TO SUBMIT MY PARENTS TAX FORMS?

Parent tax forms and signature(s) are needed if the student can still be claimed as a dependent according to Federal Financial Aid law. A student is ONLY CONSIDERED INDEPENDENT according to Federal Financial Aid if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Is at least 24 years old by December 31 of the award year
  • Is married;
  • Has legal dependent(s)
  • Is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces;
  • Is an orphan of ward of the State of California or his/her residential state;
  • Has received a dependency override through the CSUF Office of Financial Aid
