Program Activity and Timeline

All U-RISE Scholars are expected to take the required courses listed according to the timeline provided. The U-RISE Scholars will also apply for and participate in extramural summer research experience (SRE) program after their first year. During the second year, the U-RISE Scholars will apply to graduate school (PhD or MD-PhD) programs.

1-Summer

  • Summer Workshop (Session A, May/June to July)
  • Independent research in the mentor's laboratory

2-Fall

  • BIOL 480U (1 unit) 
  • ENGL 363 (3 units)
  • Independent research, 499L or equivalent (1 unit)
  • Major courses
  • GE or minor courses
  • Plan and prepare for summer research experience (SRE) program applications

3-Spring

  • BIOL 480U (1 unit)
  • Independent research, 499L or equivalent (1 unit)
  • Major courses
  • GE or minor courses
  • Apply to  SRE programs
  • Prepare for SACNAS conference abstract
  • Apply for SACNAS travel scholarship
  • Do GRE Prep (if possible)

4-Summer

  • Do SRE program (June to August; do GRE Prep if offered by SRE program)
  • Plan and prepare for graduate school program applications
  • Submit a SACNAS conference abstract (if not done in spring)
  • Take GRE (if needed)

5-Fall

  • BIOL 480U (1 unit)
  • BIOL 498 (1 unit) asynchronous
  • Independent research, 499L or equivalent (1 unit)
  • Major courses
  • GE or minor courses
  • Attend SACNAS or ABRCMS conference (meet grad sch program recruiters)
  • Apply to graduate schools

6-Spring

  • BIOL 480U (1 unit)
  • BIOL 498 (1 unit) asynchronous
  • Independent research, 499L or equivalent (1 unit)
  • Major courses
  • GE or minor courses
  • Attend a second conference (if possible)
  • Graduate school interviews (if applicable)
  • Thesis submission and defense
  • Graduation
