What is Upward Bound?

The Upward Bound Program provides fundamental support in preparing high school scholars for college success. The program provides early exposure to research and scholarly activities that provide opportunities for scholars to succeed in high school and ultimately in higher education.

Upward Bound serves high school scholars from low-income families and high school scholars from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which scholars succeed and complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college.

Who is eligible to participate?

California State University, Fullerton’s Upward Bound Program is 100% federally funded. Admission into Upward Bound is open to those who meet the eligibility criteria, regardless of gender, race, national origin, color, age, religion or disability.

The following requirements must be met to be eligible for admissions to the Upward Bound Program:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Meet federal low-income guidelines and/or be a first generation college student, and/or at academic risk.
  • Have graduated  or will be graduating from 8th grade (by the summer when you apply).
  • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Must attend one of the CSUF Upward Bound target high schools

How do I become a Upward Bound scholar?

  • Step 1: Submit a complete application, including the Upward Bound Application, an autobiographical essay, and a teacher recommendation form.
  • Step 2: If the scholar meets eligibility requirements, an invitation will be sent to the scholar and their parent/guardian to attend an informational session. The scholar and a parent or guardian must attend the informational session.
  • Step 3: Once all the required documents are submitted, the scholar will undergo a 60-day provisional period where the scholar's academic performance will be monitored. If the scholar successfully completes the 60-day provisional period he/she will be awarded permanent admission into the program.

When does the enrollment period begin and end?

Upward Bound is currently accepting applications for the 2025–2026 and 2026-2027 academic year and admits students as space becomes available. The program conducts recruitment during both the Fall and Spring cycles.

  • Fall Recruitment: Applications and all required documents must be submitted by the announced deadline to be considered.
  • Spring Recruitment: Applications and all required documents must be submitted no later than the end of March to be eligible for participation in the Summer Enrichment Program.

How are scholars selected?

Scholars are selected based on academic need, motivation to pursue a post-secondary education, and willingness to commit to a challenging college preparatory program, as well as meeting program eligibility requirements.

When are new program participants required to begin?

Scholars can be admitted through the academic year. Summer Enrichment Program Scholars admitted during the spring semester must attend the Summer Enrichment Program (usually in June) and must attend through July.

What if an acceptance letter was not received?

All applicants will be notified of their application status and will receive one of the following: an acceptance letter, a non-acceptance letter, or a notification of placement on the waiting list.

What are the program’s expectations of participating students?

Upward Bound is committed to supporting students in reaching their educational and personal goals. In return, participating scholars are expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Motivation : Show a genuine desire to prepare for college by making a consistent effort to earn strong grades, particularly in core college-preparatory courses. Your determination and choices play a key role in achieving your aspirations.
  • Commitment : The Upward Bound staff is dedicated to investing 100% effort in supporting each student. Scholars are expected to match this commitment by prioritizing the program and fully engaging in all activities.
  • Persistence : Work steadily toward academic goals, even when challenges arise. Persistence—more than natural talent—helps students overcome barriers and achieve long-term success.
  • Enthusiasm : Approach learning with curiosity and excitement. Enthusiasm is contagious and inspires both peers and mentors to collaborate and grow together.
  • Follow-Throug h: Take responsibility by developing effective study habits, meeting deadlines, and honoring commitments. Consistency builds self-discipline and greater control over one’s future.

What can my scholar expect from Upward Bound?

Upward Bound provides a variety of services and activities to help scholars prepare for college.

What does it cost?

California State University, Fullerton’s Upward Bound Program is 100% federally funded. Participation in Upward Bound is completely free for eligible students. The only requirement is your commitment to the program.

All program services and activities—including tutoring, workshops, field trips, transportation, and the Summer Enrichment Program (with meals and housing)—are provided at no cost to participants.
