Frequently Asked Questions

What are the features of the Office 365 Outlook Email?

Your email account has 45 GB of storage, it is accessible from any internet browser, and it is accessible through the Microsoft Outlook app on mobile devices and desktop computers.

What is my email address?

Your CSUF email address is username@csu.fullerton.edu (students) or username@fullerton.edu (faculty/staff) where username is your Portal username.

Can I change my email username?

Students

If you are a currently enrolled student, you can submit a username change request* by emailing the IT Help Desk: StudentITHelpDesk@fullerton.edu

*Note: Usernames can only be changed once per year.  You will need to verify ID by presenting valid photo ID via a Zoom meeting.

Faculty/Staff

Please contact your Department IT Coordinator (DITC) for assistance with this request.

Will I be able to forward my CUSF email to another email address?

No, your CSUF email cannot be forwarded to a personal email account due to the campus' security policy and to prevent spam and phishing scandals.

Can I use my personal email account as my preferred email account for all campus communication?

No, you cannot change your preferred email (username@csu.fullerton.edu or username@fullerton.edu) to a personal email account.  Your CSUF email is the only email that will be used for all campus communication as per the campus' security policy and to prevent spam and phishing scandals.

Can I still access my email through SMTP/IMAP/POP?

To secure CSUF email accounts from being compromised legacy protocols such as SMTP/IMAP/POP have been turned off. You will need to use a mail client that supports Microsoft Exchange Active Sync and uses modern forms of authentication. Microsoft Outlook is the supported and recommended client for this.

Can I access my email directly from Outlook.com instead of going through the Portal?

Yes you can.  For the username make sure you enter your full campus email address i..e @csu.fullerton.edu or @fullerton.edu.  You will then be redirected to the CSUF Microsoft Authentication login screen where you will need to re-enter your username & password.

Why do I need to use Duo 2FA to access my email?

DuoTwo-Factor Authentication (2FA) will be required when logging in to applications which require Microsoft login. This is to expand the use of Duo security to other applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.

Why do my emails have the [External] tag and caution banner?

To provide an additional level of cybersecurity, CSUF has implemented [External] email tags and banners to help users identify email origins.

  • Emails received from outside our campus email system will have a cautionary orange banner and "[External]" in the subject line.
  •  Emails received from external campus partners are identified with a cautionary blue banner and “[CSUF external service]”
The External email tags and banners was added to emails to help users identify potential phishing and improve security, thus it cannot be removed.

Additional Information on External Email Tags

For security best practices, please visit the Information Security Office website

Why am I getting emails from Proofpoint and what are the Spam Protection Daily Report emails?

These emails are from the IT Help Desk identifying suspected spam messages sent to your campus email account.

For more information and instructions on how to modify your spam digest settings, please review the ProofPoint guides above

I received a suspicious/phishing/spam email, what should I do?

You can report a suspicious email directly from your email inbox.

We advise that you do not click on any links, scan any QR codes, open any attachments, fill out any forms or provide login information in suspicious looking emails. Please also do not share your CSUF login information with anyone, save your login information on public computers or approve any Duo notifications that you did not initiate.

What will happen to my student email account when I graduate?

For students who graduate 2008 or later, your student email account will stay active*. Graduates from prior years are not eligible for an email account. You may check your email by logging into the CSUF Portal or directly from Outlook.com.  If accessed from Outlook.com, for the username make sure you enter your full campus email address i.e. @csu.fullerton.edu.  You will then be redirected to the CSUF Student Authentication login screen where you will need to re-enter your username & password.

* This is subject to change, and you will be informed if your email account will be deactivated.
