Chuck Tumlinson is the director of Cal State Fullerton’s Jazz Program. CSUF students under his direction have achieved acclaim, winning the Fullerton College Jazz Festival, the Reno Jazz Festival, the Downbeat “Deebee” awards and membership in the Disney All-American College Band and the Grammy Jazz Ensemble. Other students have gone on to perform with Maynard Ferguson and Count Basie & the Airmen of Note.
As a jazz performer Tumlinson was featured as trumpet soloist with the University of North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band. He has performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, Terence Blanchard, Mark Murphy, Al Jarreau and Ray Charles. He has been a featured performer at several national conventions and has appeared as soloist, clinician and adjudicator throughout the country. His compositions and arrangements have been recorded by leading bands and performers throughout the country. On the classical side, he has served as principal trumpet of the Wichita Fall Symphony and performed with the Kansas City, Wichita; Ft. Worth and Sunflower Chamber Orchestras.Tumlinson received his Ph.D. and master’s degrees from the University of North Texas and holds a BME degree from Wichita State University.Tumlinson is a Yamaha Artist/Clinician.
