Post-Doctoral Fellow – Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

12-Month Appointment

California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), with an anticipated start date of July 31, 2026.

Program Overview

The CAPS Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program provides recent graduates of APA-accredited doctoral programs in psychology with the opportunity to further develop generalist clinical competencies within a higher education setting. The fellowship is designed to support the completion of supervised experience requirements for licensure while promoting the ethical practice of psychology with a diverse student population.

The program emphasizes the development of culturally responsive, independent practitioners through supervised clinical work, outreach, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Core elements of the fellowship include crisis intervention, brief individual therapy, group counseling, outreach programming, and campus liaison activities.

Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the CAPS Director, the Postdoctoral Fellow will provide:

  • 65% Direct Clinical Services
  • 35% Outreach, consultation, and professional activities

Although this appointment carries faculty status for collective bargaining purposes, it is a full-time, 12-month clinical position.

Work Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Occasional early morning, evening, or weekend hours may be required. This is an on-campus position (not remote).


Primary Responsibilities

Direct Clinical Services

  • Conduct intake evaluations and psychosocial assessments (in-person and virtual)
  • Provide brief individual therapy, crisis intervention, group counseling, and psychoeducational groups
  • Perform clinical triage and case management
  • Collaborate with CAPS psychiatry and campus partners
  • Coordinate referrals to on- and off-campus providers

Crisis Response

  • Provide immediate intervention for students in psychological distress
  • Collaborate with campus partners to respond to urgent mental health concerns

Outreach and Prevention

  • Develop and deliver workshops, presentations, and outreach programs
  • Participate in campus-wide initiatives (e.g., screenings, prevention efforts)
  • Contribute to special outreach projects for a diverse, metropolitan student population

Campus Liaison Role

  • Serve as a liaison between CAPS and assigned campus partners
  • Build collaborative relationships and support coordinated care
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and consultation activities

Consultation

  • Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, and student leaders
  • Offer expertise on student mental health, development, and well-being

Indirect Services and Training

  • Maintain timely and accurate electronic clinical records in compliance with legal and ethical standards
  • Participate in clinical team meetings and crisis response discussions
  • Engage in committee work as assigned
  • Attend weekly individual supervision in accordance with California Board of Psychology requirements
  • Participate in HIPAA-compliant review of recorded clinical sessions for supervision

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program (degree conferred prior to start date)
  • Completion of an APA-accredited internship
  • Good professional standing in doctoral training program
  • Experience working with college or university student populations
  • Demonstrated competence in crisis assessment and intervention
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to function effectively within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
  • Proficiency with electronic scheduling and clinical record systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical specialization relevant to CSUF students (e.g., students of color, underserved populations)
  • Experience providing outreach and prevention services
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple clinical responsibilities in a fast-paced setting
